Yeah, put down the pipe.  You are going to have to go used if you don't want to spend over $300.00 Even the savage rifles at WalMart are more than that.
For less than $400.00 new you can get into some Savages and some Howas / Wea. vanguards. Go to guns america and search for "Howa" or "Vanguard". There are some just over the $300.00 mark.
