Default Long range/varmint gun

Hey guys,
Im looking at getting myself a real good long distance rifle in a 308 and do not really know which rifle would be best as I have a few in mind? I know I want a heavy barrel and have looked at the Savage Model 12bvss and 12vss or the Remington Model 700 vs. Any of you guys shoot these rifles or have any other suggestions at rifles running around $650-800 U.S
Cheers!!

This is probably not what you are looking for but when the time comes I will be getting a varmet rig and will be a Remington 40 xb in 220 swift. Some day I will have this rig.

Its supposed to be scary accurate. Good luck

to me a long range varmint gun sounds more like a .25-06 than a .308 but the .308 will do as well.

I'd seriously look to Savage for that rifle.....the Remington 40X is also a fine choice but at a higher dollar amount and I'm not too sure that it's better than the Savage.

I'm not a Savage fan for hunting rifles but for a long range varminter I could be persueded to buy their gun. They have a new trigger that's really good and trigger is a paramount feature on a varmint rifle. They also have a strong reputation for accuracy.

For varmits exclusively I would go for 22-259 with a bull barrel. It shoots flatter or possibly a .223

For Varmint I bought a Remington VLS in .223. With the 26" barrel and my Barnes 40gr VLC handloads I can get 4000 fps with less powder and kick than a 22-250 or 220 swift.
These loads in this gun touch holes at 100 yards. The factory setting on the adjustable trigger sucks but it can be lighted easily.

I would prefer a 223 stricktly for varmint but we have had fun with a 308 on gophers and coyotes and this also lets me use it on deer if I need too.
Cheers~~

$465 from walmart, Savage "Tactical" .308win, model 110FP if I recall correctly (or 10FP or 111FP, something along those lines) GREAT shooters.

Or for approx $800 you can get a Remington 700PSS (police sharp shooter or sniper system or something along those lines), also a great shooter.

Either of these rifles are as close to the Remington 40X that any varminter would really need (target shooters MIGHT need a 40X, but they're not shooting factory rifles anyway), and they cost less than half-a little over half that of a 40X custom.

Now if you want to get into long range shooting you should try what my friends do. They had some custom made rifles in the 6mm necked down from a 284 and a 6.5 down from the 30-06, and shoot 1000 yards at the Williamsport, Pa range. It's unbelieveable what these guns could shoot at a 1000.

personally i would rather use a 6mm. It's a flat caliber with plenty of knockdown. And it even has enough for the big buck if needed.
