No offense to popeye's post, but if you're just learning to shoot, I'd suggest a pellet rifle or a single-shot, lever or bolt 22lr. A semi-auto may be a little too easy to get carried away with for a new shooter. Just my opinion.

I got my son a pellet rifle for starters. A yr later he got a 410 then a 22 single shot bolt action. When he turned 15 he was shooting a 243 handi rifle. Its best to take it slow and under adult superevision.

I'd say start out with a .22lr bolt gun. You can get them for very little $ and shoot them all day with little $. Little/no recoil, little noise (still wear ear protection), and accurate.

I got my kids a savage bolt action last year for $100, plus a basic scope for about $30.

THen you need some good supervision.

Junior buck,

I guess I haven't grown up yet I'm still shooting single shot rifles (haha). These guys are right about one round at a time, you want to learn your own personal techniques on shooting. Knowing you only have one shot and you have to make it good or that jack rabbit is going to be out of range of a single shot 22lr. will make you a better shooter. Always pick your spot on a target or animal and that is your goal to put that bullet exactly on that spot. Become better than the average hunter shooting wise, that will take some practice. Welcome to the world of shooting and hunting. Have fun and always be safe.

Well, Junior, it all depends on what you are going to use it for! I started with a single-shot .22 at age 13, and after shooting it for several months, I bought a .30/'06. Actually, although not mentioned in any of the above posts, a good pump-action shotgun, like a Remington 870, with interchangeable choke tubes, is the most versatile combination a one-gun person can own. Get a 20 or a 12 Ga. You can use it for birds, all small game, turkeys, and shoot deer with it too using slugs!

I'm not going to sell you into something you don't want or need, if you're looking to get into shooting, get a .22lr, I won't sell you into a bolt gun either, it's the better idea, but you'll graduate past it pretty quickly, and you'll wish you'd bought something else, a Marlin 60 semiauto .22lr standard model can be had for $100-120 new from walmart, I suggest you go buy one, either buy the standard model, a cheap rimfire scope off their shelves (up to $40)-make sure the rings/bases fit your .22lr, most won't, and a Box of Remington 550 bonus pack bulk ammo ($10 for 550rnds), Winds up costing about $150-175 plus tax, OR you could buy their Stainless model, which comes with a cheap scope and rings, and the same box of ammo, winds up with a prettier rifle, maybe a little cheaper scope but it's good enough, and the same ammo for virtually identical pricing.

If you're not just looking into getting into shooting, but want to get into hunting, I won't sell you into buying a rifle to learn how to shoot before learning how to shoot a hunting rifle...It's a LOT harder to become a shooter using a high powered rifle and it costs a LOT more to get into and practice (the gun will be at least twice the price new, up to ten times the price and further, ammo costs $10 per 20shots for cheap ammo vs. $10 for 550 shots).

It's probably going to be better for you if you buy a .22lr and become a shooter before you buy a high powered rifle and try to become a hunter/H.P.shooter, based on how much ammo it takes to practice enough to become good, buying a .22lr first and the high powered later makes the .22lr pay itself off so to speak:

.22lr+2 boxes ammo=$125+$20
High power+2 boxes ammo=$200+ $30 at least (NEF single shot+fair quality ammo)
Wind up two rifles with $400 invested and shot 1140 rnds, developed a good basis for a shooter.

If you spend the same $400 on your high power and ammo for it alone, you'd get one rifle and about 15 boxes of ammo, but you'd have only shot $300 rnds, and only have one rifle.

Not to mention starting out on a high power usually makes shooters learn really bad habits and develop flinches because they don't know what they're doing before they jump into a rifle that's going to kick them.

If you're wanting a gun for going pheasant hunting, a .22lr or a high powered rifle isn't going to do you any good, a NEF single shot 20ga can be had for $150 brand new last I checked, great gun too.

Give us more of an idea of what you're wanting to accomplish and we can help you out more...if you're just wanting to become a shooter, Mow some lawns and take your Mom or dad to Walmart and have them buy a Marlin 60 in stainless or standard, and a box of ammo (don't forget the scope if you get the standard-make sure the rings/bases fit your rifle though!), you'll wind up with a fine rifle, enough ammo to teach you to shoot pretty well, and a cheap scope to start you shooting a scope for around $150-175.

Start shooting your rifle single shot, you'll graduate past that in about a day at the range unless you're really not a natural shooter.

BTW, converse to popeye's post, the 10/22 would teach you as well as a Marlin 60, although it's easier to get carried away with the 10/22 because you get detachable mags, burning ammo gets WAY too easy, not to mention it costs about twice as much as the Marlin!!

I'd start youngsters out on a 20 ga (quality) shotgun and 3/4 oz of #8 shot for small game and varmints.

I bought one for a youngster years ago.....a winchester youth model 1300 that came with a certificate to upgrade the stock to full size for $40 later when the kid gets older. This is a gun that serves well now and for a lifetime if it's wanted.

I still shoot a 20 for pheasants and most all upland birds and ammo can be had for under $3.00 a box!!!

All guns can be dangerous but a .22 can be dangerous for up to a mile and a shotgun for up to an 1/8th mile
