RE: Will .25-06 work for large (elk, moose, ect game)
The .25-06 is one great caliber...but in my opinion it stops at deer-sized game. I would think that the normal 120gr bullets used in a .25-06 would be a little small for elk.
Having hunted moose, I think they are entirely out of the question there. I do think they will kill one, but they are just too small.
The .25-06 has low recoil..and is a GREAT deer caliber.
I'm not overly familiar with them, but folks are saying great things about the 7mm-08. Not sure about bullet size/selection, though.
I'd look into a .30-06...maybe a little more versatlie. Maybe somebody else can help you with the low recoil part. I know a .30-06 isn't the lightest kicking gun, but never felt it was all that bad.

RE: Will .25-06 work for large (elk, moose, ect game)
Sure it will work for all the animals. I can't say I have taken a moose, or elk with it. I prefer a 308 as a all around low recoil gun. Which I have taken a moose, deer, and even groundhogs out with.
My old guide in Newfoundland used a .243 religously for moose. Always got his moose. Open marsh land up there, you can shoot and wait all day for them to die. If they get into the wood land or get into the black spruce, might be a problem. A cow I shot with a 165gr 308, at 200 yards, acted like she got a twich when shot, then got into some black spuce, and couldn't pump another round into her. She started acting like she was drunk a few min later and fell down.
From what I have seen, with elk, they tend to run alot more when shot, and the 25 might be a tad light but I am sure would work fine.

I have seen Elk taken with the 25-06. Never happened to see moose shot with one. Its a Great caliber but I would set my lower limit for these animals at the 308. It has mild recoil but much heavier bullets. The 25-06 has the punch to do the job but only with very good shot placement. There is no room for error. The 260 and 7mm08 would offer more bullet wieght as well as low recoil. I don't like recoil any more because of a bad shoulder but I can still tolerate the 30-06 for hunting. I don't do much bench shooting with it though.
RE: Will .25-06 work for large (elk, moose, ect game)
I regularly use my grandpa's 30-06 for deer and for big game a 7mm of his. I was just looking for something else for deer and other animals, ive heard good stuff about the 257 Roberts. Can anyone tell me anything about this caliber?

I have taken elk with the 257wby and a friend took a 1200lb moose with his 25-06 but I personally would not choose a bullets smaller than 7mm for hunting either of these animals unless you are extremely patient and are willing to wait for the perfect shot opportunity.Even then I would use a premium bullet such as the partition or barnes x.They will do the job ,but I prefer a little more bullet as insurance.
RE: Will .25-06 work for large (elk, moose, ect game)
hotgunner21. I have a 257 Roberts. Its a Remington 700 Synthetic and was a limited run in 2001. I have been a fan of the 25 calibers for many years. My first was a 250-3000 that Remington brought out in it 700 classic quite a few years ago. The 257 Roberts fits in between the 250 Savage and the 25-06. It has a mild report and recoil but shoots the 100 grain X bullet at slightly over 3100 fps. Its advantage over the 6mm's is its ability to handle bullets up to 120 grains. In my mind it a much better deer/varmit combo rifle than the 6mm's. I mounted a 3x9x40 Luepold VX-l scope on it with the butler creek flip-up scope caps and put a Harris B-pod on it. For Varmits I load the 75 grain Hornady HP to about 3300 fps. Even though it shoots the 115 and 120 Ballistic tips very well, I like the 100 grain Barnes X or 100 grain Hornady Interlock for deer. If I were to take it after game bigger than deer I would load the 120 Nosler Partition. I think Ruger chambers this rifle in its all weather Model 77 and its No. 1 single shot. Good luck.

James I realize this isn't the reloading forum, but what powder/charge combo are you using for the 75 gr hornady? Have you chronied this load? I load 47.8 gr of h380 and a federal lrm primer in ww cases with this same bullet, and prints 3/4" grps. Just curious, haven't had the chance to chrony the load.

RE: Will .25-06 work for large (elk, moose, ect game)
Although the 25.06 would kill all the game you mentioned with a well placed shot and a well constructed bullet it wouldn't be my caliber of choice for anything over a deer sized animal. Joyce Hornady killed a cow elk with a 25.06 when they were testing the Hornady 120gr HP bullet. For elk and larger i'd step up to something that would shoot a little heavier bullet like the 7mm-08 or the 260 rem that James mentioned, both would be well up to the task with mild recoil. Good luck.
