Default Poll Results --- What's Your Opinion?

A Poll From AccurateReloading.com.....

"Some marketing research. Very simple... You want a Big bore for Africa, .375 and Up, which cartridge do you choose? The rifle will be a bolt action, with iron sights and for scope use if desired. This poll will stop on the 18th. You must vote to see results."

Pick one, Users may choose only one (278 total votes)

375 H&H-----------41---14%
378 WEATHERBY----3---01%
Other 375's---------9---03%
416 REM MAG------32---11%
416 RIGBY---------64---23%
416 WEATHERBY----4---01%
404 JEFFREY-------29---10%
458 WIN MAG-------9---03%
458 LOTT----------35---12%
450 RIGBY----------9---03%
460 WEATHERBY----4---01%
470 CAPSTICK------1---00%
470 MBOGO---------8---02%

500 JEFFREY-------11---03%
505 GIBBS---------12---04%

=======================================

Surprising to me that the Weatherby "Woundabeast" cartridges 378, 416, and 460 garnered only 3% COMBINED!

Remember, ONE gun for all the "Big Five" of Africa and bear in mind, you have to be able to CARRY what the rifle chambered for the round you choose. I fully expect different preferences on this website......
=======================================

WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

My pick would be the 416 Remington Mag. The reason is that I have owned one of these and shot a few more. You didn't say one way or the other but some countries over there don't allow anything sub 40 caliber. That would be another reason for my choice.

I would pick the 416-Rigby. I already own one & I have put it to the test. The recoil is really not that bad either, once I learned the proper form to shoot hand held cannons with.[&:]

I voted for the 404 Jeffery on that poll and did anyone notice that the votes are also heavily in favor for calibers under .458

The poor showing by weatherbys is complex but I see it as the contempt for Weatherby by the typical dangerous game hunter. He wants a controlled round feed and Weatherby don't offer that.....further there is serious information about velocity and penetration and Weatherbys disregard that norm and then also the weatherbys deliver a dose of recoil that isn't appreciated.....further it is not the case that Weatherby is known to be a quality product. Mausers and Mauser derivatives and M-70 Winchesters capture their interest a lot more than pushfeed rifles.....they are also in love with double rifles.....possibly a little snob factor.....

Until you've been on an actual Safari, you'll never understand this crowd.....Do you remember when you shot your first deer with that .30-30 and you was 14.....remember how long you cherished that day????

Going on Safari is the same way.....except it happens decades later.....and to most not ever....

Yes....there's a lot of ego here too.....severaL FOLKS WITH A .505 GIBBS...WOW...

Please don't ever criticize this group...try to understand them...they live in the same world us we do.....a love for hunting.....they just play with a few more scheckles than most of us.

Hi EKM,

Well you said it would have to used on the big 5 (I hope you know who is paying for this). Give me the .416 Rigby....maybe in a magnum mauser action. Good stock, double crossbolts, single leaf express rear, big white dot (sourdough) front. Also a good reliable low powered variable scope in Q.D. bases and rings. Decent stock shape, good recoil pad, fitted to me for length of pull. And I want the rifle in time to put a couple of hundred rounds through it....before the trip!

That's all!

Dave

P.S. Controlled feed only need apply! (If you run out of .416 Rigby's before I get there....I suppose I'd live if all you had was a .458 Lott.)

I've never hunted Africa and probably never will. I would think a mid-range caliber would be better so I'll pick the 458 Lott. The velocity advantage over the 458Win would be nice to have if you need it.
