Wouldn't even dream about a 1000 yard shot at a living animal. Even if I was useing a 50 BMG. That's for paper punching and human sniping in the military.

That bullet takes a long time to get there and that animal can decide to start walking, stand up, lay down, turn around, or any of a number of other things. Not to mention at 1000 yards you need very specialized scopes with enough adjustment to allow a shot at that distance. You need to know how to adjust for the wind at that distance. And a bullet will rise and fall 8 - 10 feet on its way there so you better make dang sure that you have an exact yardage..

Ok, that's more like it. You were talking about 1000 yard shots and long range hunting in the same question.

But no, I have never shot at 1000 yards. Like I said you need sonme very specialized equipment to be accurate at it.

2 MOA which is a 2" group at 100 yards would be 20" at 1000 yards. Never done it before, but would think bigbulls is on the money. 20" would be the group size, cant imagine the holdover on something like that! would be measured in feet, not inches

I love the .270 dearly and have taken several deer with it, both whitetail and mulies with 130 Nosler solid base ballistic tip bullets over 55 gr of IMR4350. These shots were from 20 yds to a measured 358 yds. This load shoots inside an inch at 100 yds. but you would never pay me enough to shoot 1000 yds at any animal. Like the guys said - thats for punching paper only.
As for an elk cartridge - I have no doubt the .270 would do the job but I believe it would be the min. caliber I would use. That's why I have my .300 Win Mag.
