Legal shotgun barrel length in Ohio?
 

I recently inherited a Stevens side-by-side when my uncle passed away. He cut the barrel to "make a grouse gun". The barrel now measures 23 1/4" long. Is this barrel length legal in Ohio? Thanks.

It is a federal violation for a barrel to be less than 18 in, or at least it used to be when I was in law enforcement...

Well, since 20" slug barrels are pretty universal, I'd say 23" is legal throughout the U.S. ....:D

per federal regulation...and I'm using memory here...shotguns must have a minimum length barrel of 18" and rifles 16"

A shotgun with shortened barrels probably won't make much of any kind of gun unless the chokes are restored. I suggest you bite the bullet and install screw in chokes.

Thank you all for the input. I understand the concept of chakes and realize this gun will not hold any pattern except a complete scatter. I have not decided whether I will have a gunsmith install tubes or not. This is a keepsake for me. As I stated, it belonged to one of my uncles. I just do not want to have an illegal firearm in my home. Thank you all again for your feedback.

Federal law is 18" barrel on shotguns. If I remember correctly overall length must be a min. of 26". Rifles must have a 16"bbl. Your 23 1/4"bbls are well within legal limits.

here in ny it has to be atleast 16 inches
