Default 300 Win Mag vs 300 WSM

To the average hunter, what would advantage does the 300 WSM have over the 300 Win Mag? With 150 grain bullets, the ballistics are almost identical.

I am not really sure that the short action gives me a clear advantage in the woods.

Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Whichever you like best. They are pretty much equal with bullets up to and including the 180 grain bullets. I like the Short action and the 300 WSM has proven both accurate and a little lighter to carry. If I had a 300 Win Mag I would keep it. If I was buying a new one it would absolutely be the SHORT MAG.

ballistically for 180g and down the 300win and 3000wsm are almost the same it isnt until you go above 180g bullets that the 300win has the advantage. the major advantage with the wsm is that you get a shorter action, shorter barrel and a lighter gun. to determine which is better for you look at browning for instance with the wsm you get a 23 in barrel compared to the 26in spout from the 300 win mag. this will make for a easier handling gun in tight situations.

The advantage for me is all in the gun, not the round, in the case of the A-Bolt it is 4 inches shorter and 13 oz's lighter than the full length magnum. If that doesn't make a difference to you then it will just be a toss up because there isn't a whole lot of difference in the ammo with less than 180 grain bullet.

There is no difference if you shoot factory loads. If you handload a standard 300 mag is more powerful. The short mags can be had in slightly lighter rifles if you are looking for that.
Ok Prove it and tell me what loading manual(s) you used? I have had both calibers very interested in your reply...

Oldelk, you know i love the 300WSM, but I can load a 165gr bull Tip in a 300Win Mag with RL22 to 3300fps. I don't know anyone that can acheive that with a WSM. Granted that is a gun with a long throat, and the bullistic tip is loaded well out there. It I sank it down to the recommended 3.34, it goes well past pressure according to the primers. Now this isn't my gun, but a guy in my clubs. I am not too happy loading it to where the primers are a tad flat, but he likes it and it is accurate.

They are very close and if you already own one I couldn't see a reason to buy the other unless it just having the latest thing . The 300 Win is a bit faster in handloads but the difference is very little .
Now that 4" shorter bolt in the Abolt might interest me Gordon G ,where did you see it . [>:]

Factory loaded and with the same length barrels there is very little balistic difference between the two and depending on the specific guns being used one could have an advantage with two guns and then it could flip flop whth two different guns.

If you reloed the full length version will have a balistic advantage over the short version.
