I don't know that I'd be caught using a Mini-14 on varmints, it's just too inaccurate, basically (don't tell Ruger I said that, because I love all of their other guns, but not the minis)-the Mini's are a waste of good money, for a .223, you can buy a AR-15 for the same price, maybe $50 more, and the QUALITY is absolutely beyond compare!!!! For a 7.62x39mm, for less than half the price you can buy a clean SKS that will certainly outshoot the mini-30, if it isn't accurate enough, you can always sell it to a sucker who wants a SKS and come out clean, at any rate you spent less than half initially. For the same price, you can get a AK-47, which will certainly outshoot them both to an astounding degree.

Despite knowing this, I've bought mini's on occasion, all used from men that were looking to unload a terribly inaccurate rifle, I shot them a bit, then traded them-one I bought for $50 and got $250 trade value for it-they resold it for $400 to some poor sucker...the mini's I shot liked 55grn Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips...you've got to clean the hell out of your rifle though, because of the moly coating on the bullets, fouls up the gas system a bit to say the least if you don't keep care of it.

I don't think I would go the custom route on these minis. I had one for a brief period. Wasn't very accurate. Around 4 to 5" groups at 100 yards. So I was going to go nuts on accurizing, but in the end after a bunch of research, I could have a good bushmaster or Fulton Armory. So I sold it.

I mean mine could have been a lemon, but there is alot of people with lemons.

I have 2 mini's, both customized by ARS of Odessa tx. its takes some money but they shoot well, my 14 will shoot sub MOA with almost any 55 gr. load, my 30 (which is now a 6mmPPC) does much better. You can get the same accuracy much cheaper with an AR (which I have 3 of) but DANG THOSE AR'S ARE COLD WHEN ITS BELOW ZERO! However all is not lost, a bunch of guys on www.perfectunion.com are playing with cheap self done accuracy work, the main thing they say helps is cut the barrel off at 16" and install a muzzle brake.

yeah I think so to eldeguello, but more than a few of those guys report dramatic accuracy improvements most down to around 1 moa by making the barrel shorter (and stiffer) and adding weight to the barrel (dampens harmonics) I haven't tried it so I can't say either way, but it does make sense, BTW I heard that ruger has the grand total of $4.25 in each barrel they install on a mini.
