I'm assuming that you mean NEF Handi-Rifle, and yes it would be a good beginner gun.

Just make dang sure you can hit your mark. The .243 is a very capable caliber...if you hit em right.

The NEF/H&R Handi Rifle is a great rifle, the .243win is a good choice for deer too, it's a great combination to teach a beginner on, one thing you need to stress is shot placement-he pretty much only gets one shot, and his one shot is on the low end of the power spectrum.

You can't beat the Handi-rifles as far as single shots go, you can send them back into the factory and have new barrels fitted for about $150, so you could have the .243win and another cartridge that both fit on the same receiver-my choice honestly would be a .308, then buy a .22-250 and a .45-70bbl.

The NEF in 243 Win would be a good starter rifle but the 7mm-08 Rem would be even better.

The nef is a great rifle with a low price tag. The 243 is a great round but like frizzellr mentioned, the 7mm-08 gets alot of thumbs up on this board ( and most others).
