Default KDF????

Hello guys, I am having a KDF muzzlebrake put on my model 700 in .270. With the 22'' barrel on it, it seemed to not stay down and be jumpy. I am having the KDF put on the end of my barrel soo it should increase the length. My question for you guys is, what should I expect with the muzzlebrake and the .270? Thanks for any input.

Shoot Straight!

Well, I am kinda surprised your getting a muzzlebreak on a 270. Really don't need it on a mild recoiling rifle like that. But hey, its your rifle. It will kick like a *****cat now. Those KDF's are very effective. I have shot browning abolts 270s with boss's and recoild like a 44mag in a rifle. You might want to get an end cap to be able to take that on and off. I think you will find you really don't need it and it might get in your way with the extra barrel length.

Hi Kyle3,

Our son had muscular dystrophy so I had an "integral brake" machined into a .243 to reduce recoil even more. So I understand there are circumstances which would cause one to reduce recoil as much as possible.

With the brake on a .270 it should recoil more like a centerfire .22 or .24 caliber rifle. But it will be extremely loud! I'm talking under certain conditions...ring your ears loud! I had a .25-06 with a BOSS that I shot one day in the field....and forgot my plugs. My ears "hurt" for a couple days. I sold the rifle.....because I didn't want a rifle I couldn't even take a shot hunting...without damaging my ears, (or inserting plugs). I always wear ear protection at the range...and normally would when out for chucks...but forgot on that particular shot....STUPID of me!

Brakes are very effective at reducing felt recoil. Just expect the rifle to be considerably louder than previously!

Good luck with your brake!

Thanks guys for your help. I really wanted to get the brake more to keep the barrel down then to eliminate recoil. I hope I made a wise choice, and will have to battle the noise. Most of my hunting is done in close quarters, I am talkin less then 50 yards for deer. Even though the bolt action isn't maybe the best way to go in these kinda circumstances I am in love with the rifle. My problem is that if I need a quick second shot, the front end comes up and I lose valuable time bringing it back down and trying to acquire my target. I really hope I made a wise choice. I am getting the rifle back after the New Years soo I will let you know how it goes. Will I really need to use plugs though, when I am hunting? For the 1 or 2 shots that count a year where I don't wear plugs is going to go be enough to give me hearing problems. Being only 22 I don't think I can afford permanent hearing damage at this time. Thanks again.

Kyle

One single shot with a braked rifle and no hearing protection will often cause your ears to ring for a substancial period.I shoot large magnums such as the stw's and ultramags and my ears never rang until I fired on shot with a browning boss equipped rifle.A friend fired one shot with a kdf causing his ears to ring for several hours. Our annual hearing tests at our workplace have shown that his hearing was permanently damaged from that one incident.

Thanks Stubblejumper:

Do you think that I shouldn't have him put the brake on the rifle now? All I wanted to do is keep the muzzle jump down but I really don't want hearing damage.

I would forget the brake and learn to cycle the action while recovering from recoil. With practise the next round will be ready when the gun is back on target. This is the reason why a practised bolt action shooter can shoot accurately just about as fast as levers or pumps in heavy recoiling rifles. In all cases one can't shoot accurately again until he has recovered from recoil and the sights are returned to the target.

I would have the muzzle brake installed, just for the reason you mentioned to controll muzzle flip. As far as noise, one is suppose to use ear protection when igniting a firearm. In the field one can use a Walkers Game Ear to protect hearing. Good luck.
