Default .30-06

An old man I know has offered to sell me his .30-06. He has said it is a Remington "Model 70", and I tried to correct him once and asked if it was a Winchester Model 70 or a Remington Model 700, but he insisted it is a Rem Model 70.

It would come with a Weaver scope. He's had it for over 10 years and killed over 40 deer with it (he gets to hunt from Feb to Oct on a farm...some crop law). There is nothing wrong with it. He's just too old to use it anymore, and wants someone to have it that will use it.

Assuming it's in good shape (I'm assuming this because he said as much and he seems like the kind of guy who takes pride in his rifle)...what would be a reasonable offer for the rifle?

You must understand that it could be anything.....It's clear that he don't know what it is....

Don't offer a dime until you've seen it.....it just might be a p-17 or springfield.....

If it's a Rem 700 or a Win 70 in good shape (ignore the scope) I'd offer $350.

Both in .30-06 are superb arms and will last you a lifetime.....but you need to see the gun.....It's clear that he don't know what he has.

You need to find out if it "really" is a Rem. or not, and if it is, is it an ALD or BLD model. Also, what power of scope, and kind of mount????

I don't see how your question can be accurately answered untill you find out what it "really" is.

Sound advice from vapodog! I wouldn't even consider offering a penny until i seen the gun, there's no telling what the guy has and it sounds like he's not so sure himself. As for the caliber the 30.06 will do all you ask of it and then some. You can get bullets for it just about anywhere that stocks ammo.

Good caliber.. A model 70 is a Winchester. If it is in good shape, i would go about $300 or less depending on the scope. This is with it being in good condition. You can get a brand new one for under $400. Good rifles though, whether it be a Rem or Win.

I wasn't planning on offering anything until I see it. I'm assuming he's going to have a price in mind if I tell him I'm interested.

But I'm assuming it's a Remington Model 700 (either ADL or BDL no telling) .30-06.

Also, assuming it's in decent shape...does everyone agree that $300-350 is a good offer?

When you say ignore the scope, do you mean don't buy it or don't pay any extra for it?

I wouldn't pay extra for the scope unless it was a scope I really wanted or it was a high dollar scope.....but you said it was a weaver.

govtmule, in all due respect to the older gentleman Remington never made a model 70 to my knowledge. I even went into a Gun Traders Guide and there is nothing of that sort made by Remington.I'm sure he's confused on what he has.

You may consider offering him more than what it's worth say $500 if he will let you kill those nasty crop eat'n deer of his. Damn vermon!

I may be mistaken, but I think Remington made a Model 7 or Model 70 prior to introducing the 700 series of rifles. Maybe that's what he's trying to say. And the older Weaver scopes were pretty darn good, and clear. Especially if it's a fixed power. Look it over, if it IS a Rem, and it's got a clear Weaver fixed power scope on it, I'd let him set the price. Then if I were comfortable with it, buy it.

Hell, even if it's a Winchester, and all other things the same as I stated above, I'd still buy it. Especially if it's a pre-64 model.
