Default suggestions on new gun

Looking for a short action, 22" barrel, light, SS . Rifle Leaning towards the Rem model 7 or the Win classic in .30 short .. Or .260 (open to others) .. I will only use it for whitetail . Range will vary but not more than 300 yds. I have many other guns from 22's -.45 with alot of mags but I am looking for something "handy" .. Thanks Bill

There is not much difference at all. One real handy rifle I looked at a few weeks ago was the Model Seven Remington in thier 300 Short Mag. The Winchester version seems to be a lot more popular.

The 300 WSM is quite a bit more popular than the 300 SAUM from Remington. The 300 WSM also has a slight edge ballistically but both fall behind the 300 Win Mag. Personally a gun the size of a Rem model 7 is just begging for the 260 Rem. I would look at the Ruger Compact as well.

I see the WSM is about 100 fps faster than the REM, I bet with hand loads we can fix that. Is the case capacity much different? I looked into the rugar compact but it only comes in wood and I want a synthetic evey other peice I own is wood and I want one I can be a little rough with .. The .260 is still not out but I am leaning towards a little more punch ..Bill

The Ruger Compact comes in laminate which I prefer to synthetic. You get the feel of wood with the durability of synthetic. If you are thinking about the SAUMs you might be sure to get plenty of brass. There isn't room for two short mags out there and Winchester has a foothold that Remington just can't make up. Personally I don't care for any of the shorts. No purpose in them for what I do.

Hi 338,

The .260 Remington is decidely worth a look. I have one in 700 ADL and it was a "shooter" right out the box! But if I was looking for "handy" I would give the Remington Model 7 or the Ruger Compact serious consideration. I've owned copies of the Model 7 and they were very nice indeed. But I must confess, I think the little Ruger Compact has stolen my heart! I would most assuredly get SS and laminated. The beauty of laminated wood is that it really is the best of both worlds. (A little heavier than synthetic....but actually tougher. And unlike a single blank of wood....it "won't" warp!) And to my eye at least not only much more beautiful than synthetic....but every bit as good looking as all but the "finest select wood stocks".

The .260 wouldn't dissapoint!

Good luck with your decision.

I agree about the laminated, I have 3. The major reason on getting the synthetic is I use a atv to hunt ( I am paralized from the waist down) and my guns show it from going thru the brush and genral banging around on the bike. With the big one being last week I was going down a rocky hill with my winlite lam. across my lap (instead of in the scabard) and it slid off on to a rock and broke the scope and gouged the stock. I know nothing will withstand that but with the synthetic I will have no scratches, So there will be no crying every time I get a new scratch or nick.
I compared the .260 , 7mm and the .300 and the .300 shoots faster, flatter and hit's harder like it is supposed too. Recoil dosen't bother me so why not go with the .300?
I also looked into the A-bolt ss and it comes in .300 WSM, I had a A-bolt in .257 roberts and liked that . ..Bill
