Default Red Dot on my 30.06

Do any of you use a red dot instead of a scope on your rifle? I think it would work great in the woods driving deer. Just looking for opinions. I am a little concerned however that it may get in the way of the ejection port on my Winchester model 70 (30.06). It doesn't stretch the length of the scope mounts (much shorter). Anyone have any experience with this??

Also, does anyone have any good links to how to tune you rifle and scope? (again, new to rifles only hunting with shotguns).

I would go with a fixed power scope. Like a 3 power or 4 power. I think that would be better. My red dot isn't too great in low light conditions and you always have to worry about the battery. I usually turn it on when I think a deer is coming (it's on my crossbow) I wouldn't want to have that to do in adition to everything else when deer were being driven.

Although a low fixed power like a 2x or 4x would be good I would opt for a variable power like a 2-7x. That would give you the low power/wide field of view for driving deer and allow you dial up the magnification and take better advantage of the '06's longer range capabilities if the situation arises.
