Default Gun/Scope question...

I'm going to but a 17HMR. Actually, my wife is buying it for me for Christmas. I would be happy to spend the $200 for a Leupold...but they are running a special here right now. You get the Savage heavy barrel 17, with a 3-9 Tasco scope for $199. That's dang hard to pass up. The scope sells for $59.99. That means the gun is only $140.

Anybody familiar with the new Tasco's? I never hated them, I just hated to compare them with my Leupolds...LOL

I don't need an extra scope, (I need a home for a Unertl the way it is) so buying the gun and storing the scope is not overly practical.

Any ideas on the Tasco? Should I just get the gun and add a Leupold?

Thanks!

Is that a package deal? Can you buy the rifle for only $140.00? Most package deals like that, they throw in a cheap scope for nothing. If you can't buy the gun for $140.00, buy it and replace the scope. The Tasco might be okay until you can get a better scope, but I think you'll want to replace it fairly quickly.

I believe the gun is $165 without the scope. I can afford the Leupold now...just wondering if the Tasco scope is servicable.

Unless the new Trashco scopes have been improved they aren't much. That is a good price on the Savage 17. See if they will allow you something for the Trashco towards a better scope. I hate to see someone ruin a nice gun by putting a cheap scope on it.Between Tasco, Simmons and BSA it's a toss up.Better then nothing but not much.

I've owned several tasco scopes and have never had a problem of any kind with them...others will tell you that every Tasco they've owned was junk....I ask why they bought the second one if the first one was junk?

Go figure.....

Tasco optics aren't that great.

In my opinion, Nikon is the best optics for the money. For $200 you can get a Nikon 3-9 x 40 buckmaster scope. You will really be impressed with the clarity. I was set on buying a Leopold and I held both scopes up and you can't tell the difference in optical quality. I went with the Nikon and saved about $80 and I haven't looked back. I now have Nikon optics on all my rifles and I wouldn't trade them for any other brand.

Check them out. You'll be impressed!

Tasco makes good scopes if you get a "world class" or "world class plus" other than that they leave a lot to be desired.

I have a pair of world calss pluss binos I got a couple of years ago for next to nothing and they hqave performed very well for me. No problems at all.

Also for $200 I would forget about a bottom of the line Leupold and get a Bushnell elite 3200 for under $200. The Nikon buckmaster is a good scope but it has a two piece tube and the bushnell is a one piece that uses titanium alloy instead of alluminum.

Vapodog, I've had two Trashco's. I only bought one of them, the second one was a replacement for the first one that broke! It was trash too! Getting help and a replacement took about three months!
I would not even try to have this second one replaced again! Even for free the Trashco is not a good value! The Leupold is the best scope dollar for dollar for me!

Pro-Line, do yourself a favor and buy the Savage and put a VX-II or Vari-X-III scope on it and you'll have a setup that will last a lifetime. You can't afford NOT to by a Leupold with the warranty that they come with and the customer service that they provide! I'm like Ruger-Redhawk......I hate to see a person compromise a good gun with a cheap scope.

Thanks guys...You have helped me make up my mind. I have always been a quality-glass type of guy, (this explains my love of Unertl's) and I guess now is not a time to compromise.

Thanks again.
