Do you have an opinion on a good 22 to get. I' ll be using it for everything from plinking to hunting coons and maybe even yotes. I prefer semi-auto but could do something else. Weight dosnt matter unless its fifty pounds I' ll have no problem carrying it around. Also I cant afford anything over $200 or so, does anything fit this description?
My first thought would be to get a Marlin .22LR. The cheapest is the Model 60, tube fed 14 shot .22, which is just a little over a $125 bucks. It' s a sweet little semi-auto, BUT it gets finicky and demands to be kept clean at all times.
But then, the most bang for the buck and most reliable is the tried and true, Ruger 10/22 rifle, which has the 10 shot rotary magazine and can handle anything you throw at it! [:-] The Ruger 10/22 is probably about $175 and up.
Marlin makes a great .22 bolt, but the Ruger 10/22 is impossible to beat for what you are looking for.

I bought my son a Ruger 10/22 for Christmas last year. I found a stainless/synthetic for $199 after looking around a bit. The gun shoots great groups and my 8 year old has taken quite a few tree rats with it. I' m sure there are many other brands that are just as good but the 10/22 is a great rifle.
There are many .22LR' s in the price range you quoted. But I' d agree with many in that it is hard to beat Ruger' s 10/22. It probably has more after-market accessories available than all other .22' s combined. They are simple, sturdy, and darn near bullet proof.

For quality, durability and function, nothing even comes close to the 10/22 Ruger. They run from 140.00 for tye plain jane on up to several 100 for some of the target models.
Get a Ruger 10/22 if you insist on an autoloader.
However, I really want to tell ya to go with a Ruger 77/22 which is a bolt gun and a little more money...but it sure is a honey!
well i say i agree with every one hear i just got a 10/22 ruger last sat. and i am thrilled with it. i have taken 16 squirrels with it. going fox hunting this sat with it. BUT WAIT ONE BIG NOTE DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT SHOOT .22 STINGERS OUT OF THE RUGER 10/22 there is to much pressure and will cause you to place your barrel several times and the cases will get jammed reguaraly while tryin to eject them. just alil side note.
I have owned a 22 semi automatic Remmington tube feed since the early 70's. I don't use it for hunting but I have killed so many varmits with it from racoons to woodchuck. My grandfather gave it to me than and I have even abused it, but the gun keeps on shooting straight and shoots everything in the 22 calibur range, from shorts to longs.
