Youth Model in 25.06?
I would really like to get my 9 year old son a 25.06 for Christmas but.......I can' t find a youth stock for a long action rifle. He' s a little too small for the full sized stock right now but you know how fast kids grow. My plans were to get him a model 700 BDL synthetic in the 25.06, remove the factory stock, and replace it with a youth stock. My reasoning is that I will spend a few extra dollars now (well, actually $150 to $200 more) but will end up with a rifle he could use from now on. Simply replace the youth stock with the full size once he grows into it. Now I know this is going to make the gun some what front heavy but all of the hunting he does is out of a box stand with a nice shooting rest so in my opinion won' t be an issue. Does anyone know if there' s a company that makes a youth stock for a long action Rem 700? Thanks in advance.

Great idea. I don' t know of any companies that would make a youth stock.
When my dad bought me my 12gauge he bought another stock, and cut about 2+ inches off the end. Worked good, but I don' t know how well it will work on a rifle.

Yep, I thought about that but with the Remington synthetic stock being hollow I" m not sure if it would work. I might not have much choice but to go with the youth model in a .308 for now. Just thought the 25.06 would work out.

Check out Browning for a youth model rifle. I believe they have several models available.
Also, why would you get a .308 for a youth instead of a 25.06? The recoil will be greater and you are more likely to create bad habits with your son, such as flinching.
Just curious,
Matt

My skinny 11 year old son weighed in at around 75 lbs when he took his first deer with a .308. The recoil was minimal at best and less than the 25/06 that I shot. Ammo is also cheeper and readily availible.

The whole idea was to get him a full size gun instead of a youth gun that he would be able to use from now on by just putting the full size stock back on it when he grew into it. Spending a little extra now to save a lot later. Trust me, if I could somehow get a youth stock on a 25.06 it would already be under the Christmas tree.
Matt, I let him shoot my .270 a few weeks ago. After the first shot he smiled at me and said " that wasn' t as bad as I thought it was going to be" . Then after his second shot there was only about 1/2" of paper between the two holes at 50 yards. Although it was kicking the snot out of him he didn' t seem too bothered by it which gave me the idea that he would be fine with anything .270 or smaller. The full size stock was very awkward for him and it would be several years before he would grow into it.
Where we hunt there are shots over 400 yards and even though he' s not ready for anything much beyond 100 yards now but I want him to have something that will go the distance when he' s ready. The .308 in a youth model would actually be ideal for him right now but he would probably out grow it by the time he' s 12 or 13 years old. He' s just over 4 feet tall right now and if he takes after me, I was pushing 6 feet by the time I was 16.
