I' m left-handed, but I do some things right-handed. I usually hunt or shoot about once a year, always borrowing the guns. I' ve always been a pretty good shot from either side, left or right. Also, I' ve shot bows most of my life left-handed. And I know that I' m left eye dominant. I want to go ahead and get a rifle.
My question is this: should I try to get a left-handed rifle?
I' ve looked a little and it is tough to find lefties if they carry them at all. It will really limit my options. Especially since I was probably going to buy from my local Wal-Mart.
I know it' s really up to what I feel comfortable with. I feel pretty comfortable either way, but I suspect that over time I would be a better marksman from the left side. I would just like to hear your opinions.
Frankly I would recommend a lefty since you' re left handed and left eye dominant. If you can' t find the LH model you want at Wal-Mart, make a special order through them. Local dealers will also make special orders for you.
Personally, I' ve bought all but one of my firearms online. I can search from dealer to dealer for just the right gun at just the right price. You might want to do a quick search before you hit Wal-Mart.
I am a south paw when it comes to hunting bow or gun. I use to use RH bolts or pumps to supplement my lh shooting style, it can be done. However I have been slowly switching my hunting rifle to LH and that is all I use now, the safety is in the right spot and if a follow up shot is required to work the bolt without deshouldering is much nicer to keep on your target. I personally would suggest looking into the LH action and using what god gave you. A number of companies offer lh bolts such as Browning, Rem., winchester, tikka, ruger and savage. Really it is your choice and I know a few guys who are LH but shoot RH actions. Try out a few and see what fits you best, your are much further ahead buying the right(left) rifle first than trying to piece it until you can get what you want later...I really wish I would have done that from the start it would have cost me a lot less in the long run![:' (] If money/need a rifle is a concern a pump or lever would be another option and not a bad choice for a starter gun. I now prefer the accuracy and simplicity a bolt offers, but this is where I started and it accounted for many a happy trip. I then went to the rh' d bolts and would try to steer anybody away from that avenue if they intend to shoot LH...just my 2 cent worth having been there
Any Wal-mart will special order a gun for you. Takes 1-2 weeks for it to come in. I have really shopped around for gun prices the last couple of years, but nobody comes even close to their prices. How can they when Wally buys thousands at a time? No, I don' t work for them, or own stock in them. I do however value the money that I earn, so whether I like it or not, I give Wal-mart my business.[:@]
I would much rather support the " mom & pop" places, and I do when not so much money is involved.
Here is some advice, tkae it as you will; When they are ordering the rifle, double check their order numbers, I just got one on special order from Walmart about a month ago. When the lady from the craft section of the store put the order in, (yes you read that correctly, CRAFT section) she typed in the wrong number to order a >223 and not a .308. When I corrected her she asked if that mattered.
Tim (govtmule), Our local Walmart in Harrisburg, PA has a catalog they keep behind the counter that you have to ask for. Walmart.com also has some of there gun catalog online listed. The last time I checked (about two weeks ago) they had Browning, Charles Daly, Cricket, Henry, Ruger, Savage, Weatherly and Winchester listed. No Remington, or Tikka for some reason, but they are in the store catalog. Here is a link with the prices taken from there website. http://www.walmart.com/promos/2003_Walmart_Kiosk.pdf Can always print it off and take it to your local mom and pop store for price comparison if you wanted. They also list alot of left handed firearms for all of us South Pawers!

Family.....The other ' F' Word!
I spend a lot of time browsing Auction Arms. There are quite a few dealers there selling brand new guns way below retail.
I bought my 700 from Impact Guns. They' re out in Utah, selling everything from ammo on up to Class III items.
Wal-Mart' s prices aren' t bad, so it might just be easier to order through them. Nothing drives me crazier than having to wait a week for my new gun to arrive. Also, when I buy online I usually spend $40 for shipping and the local FFL transfer fee, in addition to the cost of the firearm itself. Hope that helps; good luck finding the best deal!
