I would go with the 308. It will do everything then 7mm-08 will do and a little more.

hey tiger,
I own an encore, but in the rifle configeration. I hope to someday get the pistol components. I currently have a 30-06 barrel and a 50 cal inline. I love them both. I am a HUGE fan of the 7mm-08. My fav PA hunting gun is a win mod 70 compact in that caliber. However, I agree 100% with James B. The .308 does everything the 7mm-08 does and a lil more. If you shoot factory ammunition. There are a lot more options for the .308. You will get lighter recoil with the 7mm-08 due to the lighter weight bullets. With either caliber with proper shot placement a whitetail is in big trouble with shots well out past 100 yds. Just a side note. I work for a very well known large outdoor retailer and we cant keep either caliber on the shelf. They sell like hotcakes. The 7mm-08 as of late has taken off.
