Default BOUGHT NEW 870 EXPRESS TODAY (help)

hey all i just got my new 870 express super mag combo but ive already had a problem....while i was cleaning it (i was using an aerosol solvent that my dad has been using for many years on all his guns) the solvent started to run down the stock and it took some of the stain and finish right off the stock!!!

i now have a 1 day old gun that has a stock that is half dark (factory color) and half really light color(where solvent was) so now i have to get my dad to refinish the stock...

should he just use the solvent to remove the rest of the factory finish so that its all the same color and then stain and clear coat it again? the wood hasnt been damaged where the solvent got on to it it just took off the finish....

any input would be very helpful.

thx all

ch312

BTW....went huntin with it today anyways and i shot at a grouse (miss) and i shot at a rabbit and i took off a few big clumps of fur but couldnt find it after 45 mins of looking and we couoldnt find no blood so i wasnt too worried bout it dying somewhere.

its kinda weird shooting a pump after ive been using a single shot for the past 5 years (im 18 years old) so at both animals i forgot that i had 2 more shots in the gun already....lol....maybe i should went and shot some clays be4 i went huntin with it eh?

i like this gun because it shoulders the EXACT same way as my old gun does so its perfect for me so right when i shoulder it im right on target...but i still need practise on the fast moving targets like grouse and rabbits tho

Just leave the stock as it is, it will add character to the gun.

If you do want it re-finished you will have to remove all the old finish for it to match. And then it still may end up different than the forearm.

i dont th9ink i should leave it how it is....u can really tell that they r run lines of the liquid and on the edges of where the solvent went there is little chunks of clear coat that much be scraped off....

oh well im gonna take all the finish off the stock and forearm today and then restain it and then clear coat it a few times.....

Congrats on the 870 Express!!!

They are awesome and so popular, it' s been said that " ...over the years EVERYBODY has owned an 870 at one time or another." I have a lefty version of the 870 Express 12GA and I shoot everything out of it (#8 skeet loads, #00 Buck, and even the Remington Slugger rifled slugs).

The finish on the stock will be fine. It' s no biggie. Just restain it back. It will add character to the gun! You will have a ball with your 870 for many many years to come! I know an older guy who I go duck & goose hunting with, who has a 1956 Remington 870, and that old gun is still going strong. It' s beat up, scratched, dinged, but it is just as reliable as the first day it was made! [8D]

Good luck with it!

lol...i just used the cleaning solvent to take the rest of the stain off....its great cuz it basically just washes away the stain but dosent damage the wood one bit.

smitty i changed my mind about the 835 combo cuz u have to order it from the US and get it shipped here and that means lots more $$$

i totally took everything apart today on the gun and cleaned everything with solvent, oiled it all and put it back together and man it feels like a totally different gun then on friday when i first got it. y does remington use such thick grease/oil?

its really smooth now and i got the stock and forearm off now waiting to be stained. does anyone know which stain i should use to get it back to the origoanl or close to it?

thx all

Hey CH312,

I would guess the best stain would be the basic " Walnut" type. ....just like the type people varnish cabinets with. The stock and forearm are about that same type of shade. Finish it all up afterwards with a coat or two of Satin polyeurothane to protect it.

Good luck!

if i was you i would take all the finish off and camo the stock and forearm.walmart has 4 basic camo colors.they are kakhi, brown, black and olive green all in flat[dull] finish.if not walmart, there are plenty of places that have these basic flat colors.once your stock is stripped to the bare wood,it is simple to do .remember your lesson, insect repellant will do the same thing to the finish on a stock.

I take all my gunz and strip em down and refinish with a Tung Oil. I dont like the glossy finish of the clear coats and it always messes up in the checkering and in your case the grooves in the fore grip. Look into the tung oil finishes, they are rich looking and much better for the wood.

The 870 Express needs a new stock, anyways.

I bought mine a while back. First thing I did was cammo it out. I' m going to buy a synthetic stock for it in the spring.

The Express wood and finish looked too cheap.

Great gun, though.
