What combo of mounts/rings should i use for a rem 700 .308? long action/short action ones? the one peiced or two? also, what' s up with the " Reversable front mount" on the 2 peiced mounts?
MossyOak, today I just mounted my new VX-II scope onto my Model 700 ADL using the 2-piece Leupold mounts and after sighting it in, nothing could be better. I prefer the 2-piece over the one piece because there' s a little less clutter above the action.
The reversable front mount allows you to set your scope where you need it. You can mount it closer toward your eye or further away- whatever suits you best.
Good luck with it.

Like JimboHunter1, I just had Leupold STD two-piece mounts and STD rings installed on my 700 ADL. My wife bought me a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 scope at Wal-Mart for $200. Jimbo' s scope is more high-end, but the Rifleman is quite a capable entry-level scope. It works very well at the range, and I hope to harvest many deer in the seasons to come.
Mossyoak,
I work in a gunshop, actually a very large retailer, and I mount scopes somedays for 8 hours. needless to say, I have seen soo many (some rediculous) scope base/ring setups. Its quite entertaining seeing what guys request and think up. I personally think that leupold makes excellent rings and bases. They use torx screws that stay tight(without loctite) and the bases and rings are well built. I would rank them up there with some other greats like, talley and warne(Just my opinion). You would need a short action base on your .308. It seems a 50/50 preference on two piece or one piece. Most guys tend to think the one peice is stronger, whether that is true, i dont know. If the one piece bace is mounted correctly it will not interfere with shell ejection. The two piece are nice for giving more options of ring seperation that helps with eye relief. The leupold rings whether one or two piece are windage adjustable which is a great feature. I have seen leupold rings on 300 ultra mags and 375 H&H mags and they sit tight. So in case you couldnt tell, I recommend them. Depending on the scope(specifically the length of the tube) the two piece might be better. Either way they will work great on your rem 700 .308
Thanks guys, for the feedback. I thank bcencorepa for taking the time to write that. that reassured my decision on the leupold mounts/rings. Though, bcencorepa, i have one more question to you. Would i need a long action mount for a 30-06?
2 piece bases are just as strong and lighter, also the reversal option is so you can mount a short tubed scope (3.5x10,2.5x8) leupold on a long action (270,06, 7mm)

Sometimes what will work best for you will be determined by a combination of factors. Your rifle and action type....as well as your scope choice.
I have a Remington 700 ADL chambered for .260 Remington (short action) and a two piece Leupold base system with Leupold rings worked well. A Nikon Buckmaster 3X9X40 sits on top and I had no problem adjusting eye relief.
I also have a Savage 111 chambered for .30-06 with the same Nikon Buckmaster 3X9X40 on top. It however took me three attempts to determine which combination of bases and rings to use (all Leupolds) to be able to adjust my eye relief correctly. I eventually not only turned around the front base (2 piece) but I also eventually had to use an " extended ring" in able to allow me to set the scope far enough to the rear.
On a Remington 673 chambered for .350 Remington Magnum I used a one piece Leupold base (short action model 700) and a set of QR (quick release) rings also from Leupold. In it sits a Leupold Vari X III 1.5X5X20, and I had no difficulty adjusting eye relief.
If you have a local shop that will allow you to take your rifle in to check the combination of bases/rings before you purchase them.......do so. In spite of the manufacturer recommended set ups you will infrequently find they DO NOT work well with the scope you have selected. At a minimum if you buy without first fitting insure your retailer will exchange and or refund in the event what you purchase does NOT fit!
Of course you can avoid most of the hassle by having the " in house ' smith" if one exists. Just make sure that once the scope is mounted that the eye relief is properly adjusted " for you" before you allow them to finalize the mount!
Good luck!
