Federal Law 21 years old for handgun,18 yo for rifle or shotgun. Not sure if waiting periods are the same nationwide or not.I' m exempt from waiting periods here in Florida since I have a CCW permit.I' m not even sure how long the waiting period is here in Florida. I think it' s 7 days excluding weekends and holidays.Everyone even those with CCW must have a call in down here. I bought a rifle in GA and since I had a FL CCW they didn' t have to call it in.Check with you local BATF office. They can give you more information you' re looking for. You can not be a felon, drug addict , fugitive from justice.spousal abuser etc. to buy any firearm.

No waiting period at all in TX.

I was at Academy a while back. There was an older fella buying a lever action rifle. He was filling out the paperwork and they told him to make 100% sure that he makes no mistakes before he hands it in. Well, the guy was old, and obviously in a hurry, so he proceeds to mark down that he was dishonorably discharged from the military (bad). The man behind the counter proceeded to look over his form and call in the information when he came across the mistake. The older gentleman was denied his application to purchase the firearm, and was told that he couldn' t buy a firearm from ANY Academy location, and that if he attempted to purchase a firearm anywhere else he would be denied. It was described as a " one chance" opportunity, and that once you are denied the purchase of a firearm, you are essentially " black-listed" . (Don' t know if that' s true.)

Anyways, the older gentleman was no longer " gentle" after that. I left the store, as he got pretty angry.

dodger02,
That gentleman was told wrong!!! I worked for Academy here. They have to wait 24 hours before they can fill out another form. That' s all. That' s Academy policy. They were correct in telling him to make NO mistakes on the form, especially in the " yes/no" questions. The associate should have noticed the error, asked the gentleman about it, and NOT called it in. Once the guy said it was a mistake, he could still deny him the sale at that point, but it was dumb to call that in. The guy may have to contest the denial (there is a procedure for that) and send in a copy of his DD Form 214 to prove his discharge status.

And as far as his one chance opportunity goes, Academy does not keep computerized records on anything pertaining to who buys guns, and no salesman is going to finger thru hundreds of denial sheets everytime someone wants to buy a gun. Just wanted you to know.

jjt,
To buy a pistol, you have to be 21, have a clean record, have no spousal abuse orders in effect like protective orders, be a US Citizen, and answer all the questions on the form the right way.

Waiting periods are strictly state to state. In Oklahoma, there is no such wait, unless there' s something in your background that the FBI wants to scrutinize a little better before authorizing or denying the purchase. If you have a recent (your 1st) issued concealed carry permit, you don' t even have to have the NICS check done (renewels don' t count). Check your local laws BEFORE you buy. Also, if there' s something in your background that could disqualify you, like a former felony conviction, it is a violation of federal law to even attempt the purchase.

I' ll add that the waiting period thing IS NOT nationwide, i.e. here in KS, there is no waiting period, I bought a Ruger P-97 and a Ruger Vaquero and walked out after only 7min. NICS check is immediate.
