I need some help on finding which caliber I should get, As well as a rifle. I' ve shot many guns before, I' ve owned a .22, But i' m sort of taking a " Step-Up" . I was thinking a Remington 700, I handled a BDL at a gunshop around here called Greentop, It was nice and fitted me good. I live in virginia and i' m mostly going to be probably hunting Deer. I like hunting squirrels and such sometimes-For that i use shotgun. Also, some advice on a scope. I' m looking for a caliber that will successfully take down a deer, With cheap ammunition, That performs well. Also.. A hunting basics link? I' ve been through all the safety stuff, But when it comes down to it.. I just don' t know what to do when i' m out in the woods. I' ve taken squirrels and stuff, But never a deer. Thanks.
ferst off let me wilcome you and the 700 is a grat gun as far as the calaber go with 30/06 or a 270win the reson I sat this is thay work grat for deer and any thing that walk' s for that matter if you don' t won' t to spend alot of mony look at a savage I us a 30/06 and hunt every thing from coyotes to elk and it is grat you can get ammo any were for it and in any gran over the conter good luck
You have come to the right place. It' s great to see some new guys on the board! Anyway, a Remington 700 is a fantastic gun, especially the BDL. For deer, and cheap ammo, the .243, .257 Roberts, .260, .270, .280, 7mm-08, .308, and 30-06 all offer lower ammo prices, and all have taken alot of deer. I believe all of those calibers can be found in the Remington. Magnums will work fine, but with higher ammo prices than you might be looking for. Thanks bigbore, hillbilly, for replying overnight. I' ve always had my eyes on the .308 and the 30-06, But i still want to go back to greentop when my broken leg heals to handle some more rifles.
I' m a little bit of a post saver so i' ll add this question to. Virginia hunters=Any suggestions on a place near fredericksburg/spotsylvania/manassas That area? I can' t find a spot in my town. I' ve heard of the cumberland woods, that' s sort of by greentop. Thanks guys.
A .270 is a good choice. You can use light bullets for flat shooting and varints or you can use 150 on deer. The gun is flat shooting yet has plenty of power to take down mid-sized animals. Good luck!
GREENTOP!! I used to buy stuff there in 1972 when I was stationed at Ft. Lee! Of all states east of the Missisippi, VA is by far the best!!
I used to hunt deer and turkey in the National Forests around Staunton (with a rifle) and at Camp Pickett (Fort Pickett??) and Ft. A.P. Hill with the shotgun!

I like the short case calibers, I' ve killed several deer with the 243, and just bought a 308 and tagged out on a doe with this gun. I like them both a lot. Both guns are Savage bolt actions.
It' s such a small world. :-) I' ve now been looking at the kimber 84m, It looks really nice. What do you guys think? I bought a remington m587 22 there when i was 11. (16 now). Ever since i' ve been like a little kid in a candy store.
I don' t think you can go wrong with a Remington 700. You can save some money by buying an ADL instead of the BDL. Not as fancy but the same rifle without a floor plate and fancy stock. Use the money you save on the rifle and put it towards a good quality scope. Quality scopes in the middle price range are Weaver Grand Slams and Bushnell 3200 Series scopes. I don' t think you will go wrong with either. I would choose one or the other in a 3X9X40mm. These will be a little under $200. Also, invest in a quality set of bases and rings from companies such as Millet, Redfield, Leupold, or Weaver. I prefer the windage adjustable kind.
As for caliber I would choose a 270, 308, or 30-06. These are all fine calibers and the ammo is virtually anywhere you will go. The ammo is very cheap at any Wal Mart in the US.
