220 arrow.
Was offered a old Winchester model 70 about 1940 vintage chambered for 220 arrow. All I seem to find on the net is the 220 Wilson arrow. The offered price included some old reloading dies brand un known and about 200 cases. The rifle it self was in what I call fair condition and had bluing wear and a couple of scratches in the forearm and good ding on the right side of the stock. It also wears a old Lyman peep sight. think it is worth $500.00? think I could always being it back to a 220 swift not sure though.

Its a 220 Swift with the shoulder angle changed from 21 degrees to 30 degrees. Don't know any more than that as I gathered that from the internet ... Maybe some varmint folks will chime in with some practical knowledge. If its close to the 220 Swift it can't be all bad, ... especially for varmints.
Its supposed to help case life. But again, I'm repeating what I read, not from personal knowledge.

And Secondchance pretty much nailed the case thing. PO had already started making a name for himself before the War and there were some wildcatters trying out his designs while he was off at War.
But like Mercy stated, pretty much any pre 64 Mod 70 in fair to good condition is worth $500 fairly easily. But you do know that isn't a factory Winchester barrel/chamber right? They never produced that chambering. It was a wildcat cartridge trying to improve the case life on the .220 swift. Those of us who shoot the .220 swift a lot know full well the case stretching problem inherent to that cartridge. If it's something you are interested in than it's worth the 5 bills. If it really isn't, then it aint. Ballistics are pretty much identical to the .220 swift. It MAY get a fraction more speed out of the gate but the real gift of that .220 arrow is case life extension.

Strange to think of it this way, but it's worth basically the same with or without the barrel...
So is it a normal simple fireform to get 220S to 220Arrow? Sounds like it is. So assuming a guy can find dies (or is ok with ordering them, or at least is OK with neck sizing, it's probably not a bad buy. If it's burnt out, then flip a coin whether you sell it as a project action/rifle or rebarrel it yourself.

Think I'll go for it even though I am not finding out much about the chambering. I also read about the 30 degree shoulder angle and not being able to fire form cases, have to run them thru the dies.
If the barrel is shot I will look into doing some thing else with it down the road.

If the dies are ok, and the cases are from that chamber (once fired or otherwise) you're in pretty good shape to just start tumbling and loading.
I think it sounds like a good deal., assuming it is in good working condition. You always have the option to swap the barrel in the future.
Wish I had a Model 70 on the rack. Maybe someday.
