Default bolt action jammed

Can any gun experts help me? The bolt sleeve on my Winchester 7mm mag turned while I was loading the gun which prevented the bolt from sliding in to firing position. A nice mulie got away because of this and I don' t want it happening again. Can anyone tell me why or how this happened. Maybe the same thing has happened to you.

A winchester model 70 cocks on opening and if you turn the bolt down while it is open it will uncock and not close . sounds like user error to me ,I may be wrong but that is what mine do ..

I had to pull the inner bolt sleeve back and turn with a pair of pliers to get it back to the proper position. I tried to repeat what happened but couldn' t. In the heat of the moment its hard to follow step A then step B, etc. There was a lot of fumbling for bullets, quickly chambering and cocking. Who knows what I did to cause it to jam. I just thought the rifles would be made so that a dummy like me couldn' t jam it.

In the heat of the moment a lot of things can happen . I would recommend you shoot as much as you can and get familiar with your rifle . Welcome to the Forum Halcon

If you are loading the gun (action open) with the safety in the middle position, and the " catch" on the left side of the shroud is depressed, the shroud can rotatate and will certainly not close.

I' ve never encountered this problem with any M-70 in my life.

Look at yours closely and insure the " catch" is securely engaged.

The feature is to allow ease of field stripping the bolt.

Dear Ocanuck- Check to make sure the little coil spring shroud lock on the L. side of the shroud is clean. Try blowing an air hose into it. If it is dirty and jammed a bit it`ll allow the back of the bolt[shroud] to rotate and cause what happened. Best thin to do is to make sure the safety is ALL the way back to safe and not in the middle [takedown] position when loading. The middle position is not recommended for a safety, only for takedown purposes.
