The .270 and the 30-06 are close to the same gun other than bullet choice (180 vs 150) in the two. Both shoot flat enough to not be much of a difrence.

If you are looking for a little more horse power move up to the magnums 7mm RM,7mm WBM,300 Win,300WSM.
Or go bigger yet to the 7mmSTW,7mm Ultra,300 RUM,300 WBM.

These all offer more speed and knock down power one would want, they do kick harder,it all comes with a price.

What is the intended purpose of the new gun. Just for whitetails or do you have bigger critter hunts planned?

Well DeerHunter I have you answer,a 25-06 with a 26 in pipe in the ruger #1 or the Remington Sendero with a fluted barrel. This caliber will smoke them white-tail and toast them yotes.BBJ

270 for antelope to elk and 30-06 for the bigger stuff. The 270 has the edge in long range flat shooting and the 06 has the edge with heay bullets up to 250 gr. for moose and Bears.

I would say the .30-06

It has a wider range of available weights, allowing more adjustability.

He already has a 30-06, the 25-06 would be hard to beat for what he mentioned, except the 257 weatherby mag but the ammo cost is high.
