I'm in Germany and when I leave the house to go stand hunting; I usually take a 30.06. It will take care of the Red Deer, the Roe Deer and the Wild Boar (whichever crosses my path). I'm shooting at distances up to 250 mtrs and if I hit where I was aiming (and I mostly do), it's a one shot deal. When I'm on the move or on a drive hunt in a thickly wooded area I use my lighter .308
