A third gave me a shot of the top of the shoulder and the neck as it was behind a tree. It went right down, hit e the neck meets the shoulder and it crawled about 15 yards and pumped all its blood out onto the ground. I have been deer hunting for over 50 years and I have seen a lot of blood trails, I have never seen one like this one. Completely took off the carotid The right .45 cal bullet will expand if it is the right bullet made to do so. That red plastic point on the LE ammo is not only to allow it to be used in a tube magazine, it is also for expansion and it works as advertised.
Awesome. If I ever go back to factory, I'll be sure to try LE.

Default 45-70 Ammo

I've used the Hornady LeverEvolution 325 gr. FTX load for the last few years out of my Marlin 1895GBL. This rifle has an 18.5" barrel and over my chrony I'm getting about 1900 fps. I've taken several deer and feral hogs with this gun & get complete pass thru's with about every shot. I normally shoot deer in the front shoulders and with this load they're dead on the spot. If I shoot behind the shoulder it doesn't appear that the bullet expands at all but the deer usually go 50 yards or less and pile up. On hogs (including a boar that scale weight 261 lbs) even shot through a boars shield the bullets have been pass thru's. Recoil with this load is manageable. I shoot some 440 gr. HardCast handloads that make your teeth rattle but they aren't needed for deer or feral hogs. Worked up the cast load to use this rifle in Africa but the trip fell thru and I wasn't able to go. Good luck and enjoy your 45-70, I love mine!

Great info guys. I have settled on the Hornady LE 325. Just ofr FYI I am in Ohio and they recently changed the laws to allow straight walled rifle cartridges only, no bottle necked ammo. I have always wanted a 45-70 to play with so it gave me a great excuse to get one.

I also don't think recoil will be a factor, I am a big guy, 6'3 and 285 pounds. I currently also shoot a 7mm Rem Mag (loaded hot cause the gun likes it).

Thanks again for the info.
