deer slugs for 30.06
For the past few yaers I' ve been using handloads a friend of mine has been loading. They were tipped with Nosler 150gr. b.t., but he' s going to stop loading as his hunting days are almost over[bad knees].Does anyone have a good suggestion on factory loads? The rifle I use is a Remington model 6 [pump] in 30.06. I dont want soft points as they deform somewhat from being pumped up the pipe

First, why don' t you see if you can buy his reloading equipment since he' s not going to be using it, and find out what recipes he used for your handloads and just duplicate them?
Winchester Supreme Silvertips are basically ballistic tips. Also, Federal loads Ballistic Tips in their Premium lineup. Hornady also has the SST which is a bt type bullet (though my experience with them is they are too explosive on game inside 200 yards).

I too like a " special" load but the simple truth is that any good 150 grain load will suffice for deer.....even a deformed soft point does nicely.
The previous suggestion of buying your friends reloading equipment was a very good one.

I use Remington ammo in my .30-06. I prefer a heavier bullet (180 gr.), but the 150' s are good too, depending on the situation and what your gun shoots well with. I' ve tried a few different types of ammo, but my gun likes the Remington so I stick with it.

Anyone of the factory loaded ammos should be fine in a ballistic tip form.
Rem offer BT premium called accutip
Winchester offer Silver ballistic tips in the supreme line
Federal offer the NBT in their premium line
Hornady Custom offer the SST & Interbond
All will get the job done, just find the one that shoots the best and your set. All will resist the disformation, as they are poly tipped bullet offerings.
Just a side note I used the Hornady SST last fall and was very impressed with its performance. I liken it to nosler ballistic tip in tissue damage and hole size. I would have no problems suggesting using this bullet at all distances, provided you aim for the BB. I shot my large bodied buck at 127 yards with 150 grainer out of 7remmag, it went through the rib, trashed the vitals and exited out the opposite shoulder with ease. Yeap as you could expected he piled up in a heap without a step and their was some meat loss...but no more so than a NBT or Win BT would have caused. If your looking for minimal meat damage then a ballistic tip or boattail design in most cases is the wrong bullet for you...stick to the flat based bullets. However you want him down on the ground, with lots of trauma than BT' s are everything you need. Plus should you rib in and rib out the damage to meat is nill. I personally prefer a rib to pin on the bucks I chase, I don' t want them leaving the scene and it is the price I pay producing a little hamburger.
In any regard a tremedous amounts of options available for deer and 06 from factory loads. Why worry about bullet deformation, all you need is the first one...isn' t it?
Good luck and I agree get the reloading stuff you got all winter to learn.

I have an old remington 740 in 30-06 that I keep going as a loaner gun. I tried rem corelokt 150gr that I had on hand. It shot fair at best. Last fall my brother used it and bought 180gr psp corelokt and did it shoot. He shot the biggest doe I' ve ever seen in the ribs and dropped it on the spot.

Plains Man:
What kind of game are you going after?
If you are concerned with tip deformation, you could go with 150 gr. PMC X-Bullet, Federal or Remington Nosler Ballistic Tip, Remington Swift Scirocco, or Winchester Ballistic Silvertip. Good luck.

My suggestion is only shoot Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets. Federal sells factory loads with 165 gr. Bear claws. If you want to reload them yourselve, Speer makes the 165 gr or 180 gr. .30 caliber Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets. Next would be nosler partition.
