Default 458 Lott from a .458 Winchester?

I read a statement that said one can merely rechamber a .458 Winchester to .458 Lott.

I know you can for a single shot gun or double gun...but is there magazine room in a bolt action?

The .458 lott is a blown out .375 H&H and it' s .350 longer than a .458 Winchester.

I don' t doubt the statement that one can still shoot the .458 Win ammo in the .458 Lott chamber, but I doubt there' s room in the magazine to hold the longer Ammo.

Yes, it is a simple chamber reaming job. But with a catch....not all actions are suited for the conversion. The .458 Winchester was designed to fit in a " standard" length action and was made in many rifles that would NOT be large enough for the .458 Lott. Perhaps the best known, and most often used, action that will work for the rechambering is the Magnum CZ-Brno. CZ chambers it' s .458 Winchester in the same action that it chambers the .375 H&H, (and for that matter will handle the .505 Gibbs). Usually you do not even need to alter the feed rails when converting CZ' s from .458 Winchester Magnum to .458 Lott. And ironically the CZ often feeds more reliably AFTER it has been rechambered to .458 Lott. (Apparently the .458 Winchester is so short it causes feeding problems in the large action.)

Maybe the best of all....the Magnum CZ is currently one of the " best buys" on the market! And yes the .458 Winchester does fire in the .458 Lott chamber....just like a .38 Special in a .357 Magnum! A twofer!

Good luck!

P.S. Any Ruger No. 1 Tropical in .458 Winchester lends itself well to the conversion as well!

CZ' s are a triple win:
(1) They are very economical yet high quality.
(2) They have big massive actions which are Controlled Round Feed.
(3) They handle and shoot like a dream (like a fat deer rifle).

Side Notes:
Both Ruger and CZ favor the 416 Rigby over the 416RemMag.
Ruger favors the 458 Lott over the 458WinMag.
Performance wise, the 458 Lott IS everything the 458WinMag was supposed to be (but came up short -- no pun intended).

One nice thing about both the 416 Rigby and the 458 Lott is that " officially" (per their name) they are not magnums! Therefore no " magnumitis" problems.

Does ruger even still offer the No. 1 in .458 Win? I didn' t look very closely in my last catalog, but I do know that they now offer it and the 77 in the .458 Lott to start out with.

I searched their website for .458 Lott and the only gun they chamber for it is the #1 single shot

I gotta admit I don' t bother keeping track of single shot rifles, so I can' t say what Ruger is doing over there in the one pop department. However, in the arena of Bolt Action Rifles in Safari/Dangerous Game models and calibers....

I don' t know what the confusion is, looks like the 77 is available in 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, and 458 Lott per the Ruger website....

The Ruger 77 chambered for those cartridges is the Safari Grade, (note price tag). But you get a lot of rifle for the money.....very similar to the " old English" dangerous game bolts with the " deep bellied" magazine thus increasing cartridge capacity.

If I am not mistaken both CZ and Ruger chose the Rigby version because it reaches it' s ballistics at lower operating pressures than the .416 Remington, (an important consideration in climates with tropical heat).

At one time Ruger also offered the Safari Grade Model 77 in .404 Jeffrey. A very respectable dangerous game cartridge that was popular with many game departments in Africa. It offered " certain" Elephant stopping ability with less recoil than the other commonly used cartridges. Unfortunately, many Americans didn' t recognize its' virtues, sales were disappointing, and Ruger discontinued it. Personally I' d like to see it returned to Ruger' s lineup along with the .425 Westley Richards, (hey....a guy can dream can' t he????) And as long as we' re dreaming do the .505 Gibbs as well!!!

Akbound, the problem with dreaming is that when I dream it' s for double rifles in .470 Nitro

Deams well past my affordability.

I do own a pair of .375 H&H bolt actions however.

Hey Vapo....

I have dreams like that too....until I wake up..realize the price tag.....and no it was actually a " Nightmare" !

Until I hit the lotto, (not likely I only play a couple times yearly), find out that I am heir to a " rich uncle" I didn' t know about, .....or fall down a rabbit hole into a pot of gold, (sigh)....I guess my dreams will be about more " down to earth" bolts!

Thanks for the laughs though!!!
