Default Rem 7 .308

i have an opportunity to purchase an older Remington Model 7 in .308. it is in fair condition with an excellent stock and very, very sweet trigger -- i was considering purchasing a different .308 but would have had to toss the stock trigger to the tune of $220.00 for a new Jewell for it.

the barrel looks in decent shape but i was really looking for a .243 or perhaps a .270 at best. my question is this: Can i purchase a new factory barrel in .243 or .270 and have it refit to the existing action? Will the stock bolt work with either of those two cartridges?

i am a bit concerned about going from long action to short action rounds with regard to fit in the action. should i be? while i would be perfectly happy with a .308 as a ' walking gun' , i have the feeling that the recoil from a 6 1/2 pound gun is going to be punishing at least for my 54 year old body.

what do you think?

the catch 22 of course is how much money do you stick into a used gun to ' build' what you want before you have exceeded the cost of a new one.

the only reason i am considering the model 7 over the 700 (both are used) is the trigger. if i can avoid that expense i would be way ahead of the game

Default RE: Rem 7 .308

ggruber,

You won' t be able to rebarrel the .308 win to a .270 win. The .308 is a short action and the .270 is a long action. If you want a Rem M7 in .243 I would keep looking you should be able to find one in the $300.00 range. Less headache than swithing barrels. Cost of barrel plus gunsmith. Do you have to have a Jewell trigger? If not try Timney triggers, I have one on a Win M70 and I love it. The timney is half the cost of the jewell INSTALLED, at least in my parts. The recoil of a .308 win is usually manageable for most people, however the stock design and the weight of the m7 will make it more pronounced. LOL and welcome to the boards, NBH
