Default 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail

Replacing my old gun with a new one and was wondering out of these for white tail in MN which is better? How about .308? I was leaning towards the .270 is this really the best way to go, and why? Or should I stick with the 30 caliber? Thanks for your input.

ive taken deer with both the 308 and the 3006......never shot a 270....i really liked both the 3006 and 308....both drop em right in their tracks....ive heard good and bad about the 270..i cant say whats true.......but the 308 and 3006 both work wonders for me and im sure they always will when i need them too......i doubt youll have a problem with any of the 3.....bullet placement is key to any round killing a deer....

mauser06 - If you heard something bad about the .270 Win, whoever told you was wrong. Dead wrong.

drh1175 - Of the three, for traditional whitetail hunting I' d lean toward the .308 Win. If the country opens up, the .270 is the only way to go. Unfortunately, the 30-06 is kind of the odd man out here...does everything the .308 does but kicks more and is less accurate; kicks more than the .270 and is not as flat-shooting.

Now, of course, if you throw elk into the mix (and somebody will), then the 30-06 deserves as much consideration as the others.

You can,t go wrong with any of those. You could flip a coin. The difference in accuracy between the 30-06 and the 308 is so slight that you could never see it. In some guns the opposite could be true.

In all fairness I have heard some bad things about the 270 as well, however the root cause for the problems was bullet construction and shot placement. When you push a bullet as fast as you do with a 270 it needs to hold together and there are a few out there that don' t do that very well. Don' t expect peak performance from the cheapest ammo you can get at Wal Mart. The 270 Win is a great deer cartridge. I am sure you will hear that the 30-06 is the most versatile and that may be true but if one is hunting only deer then the 270 Win or the 308 Win are better suited. In reality you can' t go worng with any of the three. All boils down to personal preference. I would actually look at the 7mm-08 Rem and the 260 Rem as well if I were getting a rifle strictly for deer. Less recoil than any of the three mentioned with great ballistics.

i have all three of the cartridges mentioned above , and i' de pick the .308 , for woods hunting and dense cover it' s available in more compact rifles than the other two are , and can do just about the same as the others can do in the dense cover performance wise as well , i' ve got two .308' s , a remington 760 gamesmaster , and a winchester model 88. two very slick handling rifles and accurate too

My family has two .308' s and two .30-06' s, and I have shot them all. The .30-06' s are actually more accurate, but that could be due to choice of ammo I suppose. Either caliber is great for deer hunting, but I prefer the .06. I' ve never shot a .270, but have heard it' s a good choice also. It would be best to shoot each caliber for yourself and decide from there if possible.

Go with the .30-06 for the simple reason that it has a much wider range of factory loads available for a wide range of applications(150 gr. to 220gr.). If you ever decide to step up to bigger game, you will have a capable rifle. The accuracy debate is negligible. Put good glass on it, practice and you will be happy.

my gun of choice is the 30-06 with 165 grainers.if you want a gun with a little less recoil the 270 would be just fine
