No. Unless the gun has some inherent problem or weakness, it should cause no problem. I wouldn't advise anyone to do it repeatedly , like say, hundreds of times per year, but even that is not supposed to be a problem on a gun in good condition. many shooters practice getting a feel for thier triggers through dry firing. If you're worried get some snap caps.
Rimfires rifles are another story altogether, as are all pistols.

Ask a competitor how often they practice by dry firing. You'll be surprised at the hours they put into it.

Worth hearing what others have to say.
I always use my home made snap caps. Pop the primer out of the spent case and install a eraser from a maniacal pencil you can buy at office supply stores.

If there's any centerfire rifle you shouldn't dry fire, I'm not aware of it, and I'm sort of familiar with just about every platform out there!

Why take a chance? Snap caps are cheap insurance nothing bad will happen and I leave them right in each firearm in the safe.
