Default RE: REMINGTON 597

I used to have one, bought it when it first came out. It was a lemon. It would jam on just aout every 5th shot, had a stiff trigger- and there wasn' t any aftermarket parts available to remedy the problem. The barrel metal also rusted often I think due to a poor finishing job- I baby my firearms and never had a speck of rust show up on any other gun before.

I have read that Remington has improved the 597 somewhat since then by producing better magazines, and probably putting better finishes on the rifle. My attitude on the 597 is that it made a very bad impression on me, and it would pretty much take the whole world to praise how great of a rifle it is before I would ever buy another.

Well I don' t trust a gun that has a trigger mechanism made from plastic and ball-point pen springs. The action feels like it is made out of sand. I couldn' t tell how accurate the thing was because it jammed every other shot. Its overall construction was just cheap. Doesn' t even make a good boat anchor.

Never owning one or shooting one I can' t give first hand experience with a Rem.597. I have looked at them, worked the action that was enough for me to never want to buy one or own one. Remington has come out with a couple of poorly designed rifles. The 710 and 597 are them. If you' re happy with your 597,I' m happy for you.I think you' ll find it' s not the gun you think it is.The Ruger 10/22 is a much better rifle dollar for dollar.
