Default bullet trap recommendations

I'm building a bullet trap for my .270 out of several sheets of 3/4" plywood. Hopefully the plywood will slow the round enough so that it can be trapped in a box behind it. I'd be interested as to whether this will be enough to stop the bullet, and whether I should use hollow point or solid rounds. Any recommendations?

Why build a trap? Just build a dirt mound 6 ft high and 10 feet deep and it stops all short of 50 BMG. Shoot at the bottom and you'll be fine.

Yep, a box filled with sand will work just fine. If you are worried, use hollow point ammo and it's not going to penetrate very far in some sand.

What keeps the sand from leaking out of the bullet holes?

a lil does come out, but it wont empty...a 270 is a very small entry..300sm and the 30-06 doesnt drain our boxes.

Check out this thread. Since I cast my own bullets this is what I'd build if I had my own place to shoot. I'm sure that you can find some steel fairly cheap at a scrap yard, and if you have a friend who has a welder it'll probably cost you a 12 pack to make it.

mythbusters shows you can bounce bullets mathematically off of steel....so if you have a steel plate...placing it on a 45* down angle, the bullets will bounce right into the ground....

i was also thinkin, bout the sand box..if ya lign the front with telephone books, it would be real hard for the sand to get out.....and besides, who uses a phone book anymore?
