deer: 270 vs 7mm-08 vs 308

On shots ranging from 10 to 250 yds, which is best for deer, a 270, 7mm-08 or 308? I know all will work well, but which do you believe is best, and why? Also, what types of bullets/factory ammo work well?

In all honesty, at 250 yds they probably are within 1" elevation of each other and within 100 ft/lbs of each other using a bullet with the same ballistic coeficient. The deer don' t know a difference.

I would say the 270Win. With my 308, I wouldn' t feel as comfortable shooting 250yards than my 270win. You can get up to 3050fps with a 130gr bullet out of a 270win. Second would be the 7mm-08. But then again, its hard to make a 308shoot bad.

For 250 yard shots, the .270 Win takes most of the guesswork out. But it really outshines the other two if you have to shoot at ranges farther than that. Within 250 yards, they are for all intents and purposes, equal.

Well i' m not qualified to offer an opinion since I am not a District Attorney but why don' t you just hold a bit higher with that flat shooting 30-30 of yours? Since it is already defying the laws of physics by being only 3 inches low at 200 yards you should have no problems at 250 right? In all seriousness though under 250 yards there isn' t much difference between the 270, 7mm-08 and 308. Take your pick. Since it seems to me you don' t reload you would probably be better off with a 270 Win or 308 Win. The 7mm-08 Rem is limited to 120 and 140 grain loads off the shelf and while adaquate, it is best handloaded.

Thanks, for that tip frizzellr, I' ve been waiting for NEF to get the lead out and have some available i hadn' t even looked at available ammo yet. I do reload so that' s not a problem. Of the factory what do you recommend for just deer probably <50 to maybe 100 yards ( those thick Maine woods)

I like 140 grain bullets personally. I use Sierra GameKing bullets and I think Federal loads them in their premium line.
