Default .38 SP/.357 MAG???

I have heard that you can shoot .38 sp out of a .357 handgun. My question is, can you shoot .38 sp out of a lever action rifle? Thanks.

Thanks guys, I was curious because a friend of mine left his .357 Marlin rifle by my house and also I am reloading .38 sp for another friend. I was hoping I could combine the two and do some cheap plinking. Thanks.
