I love them!
Practice, practice ... practice, and always make your first shot count!
Did you get a scope placed on it?

A little slower to use than a lever action, but it will kill deer just as dead as any other .30/30. If you are talking about the model 340, the only thing I have against them is that they are butt ugly! However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and the first two deer I ever saw shot were taken with a 340 in 30/30; both were one shot kills and one was on a dead run.
As 2poppa said: practice.........
My feelings on a 30-30 is it's a great deer round if you are shooting under 200 yards. You might could stretch a little further with the Hornady ammo they have now. It will do what the majority of hunters need, and in fact be more than what they need. It really is a great deer round.
That being said, if you are somewhere where long range shots are common, it's not the caliber for you.
So it really just depends on the type of hunting you are doing.
I had a 30-30 bolt gun once, although I thought it was a stevens...not sure. Its was fun for a while but the trigger was really bad and the scope mount was very awkward. I guess with sights it wouldve been more useful but I only use scopes.

I also shot every type of ammo ,mine likes win super X 150gr. best. Hope this helps good luck
My cousin has one of these. One of the ugliest guns I have ever seen, but she takes deer with it almost every year.

My first rifle was a Savage 340E. Not an ugly gun. I had to pay a gunsmith to bend the bolt so I could mount a scope on it. Extremely accurate, and I still have it. Don't ever sell it.
