Default Mineral Spriits for cleaning gun parts ?

Is it ok to clean metal gun parts with mineral spirits ?
Seems to me when I was in the Army we would strip down
our M16's and dip the weapon parts in some sort of solvent in
a huge tub.
Think maybe it was mineral spirits, but not sure.....

You got it right, no problem washing gun parts in the stuff, it is good to soak cosmolined parts in too.

It won't hurt it. In the Army I used to keep a can of break clearner to clean my M16. All they gave us was break free which didn't clean very well. I hated break free back then but now I use the break free with CLP after I clean my guns with solvent.

No factories can use that anymore because of EPA and OSHA rules. It worked so good and the substitutes really don't. I was my company's metallurgist so I had gallon bottles of methanol all over the place. That works good too.

My company used to have barrels of MEK sitting around. Man that stuff would clean anything. Not very good for your health or the enviroment though.
