Default Looking for a good deer rifle

I want to buy a rifle. It will mostly be used for deer but also moose. I want it to be a high quality rifle that will last a lifetime and under 71/2 pounds. I do not want a semi auto. I would preferr the cost to be under $700. I am looking for any suggestions do not be afraid to give your oppinion.

Thanks

I have one I'm selling but its about double that price with a scope...

So pretty much any of the name brand rifles that shoulder well and fit you will last a long time and kill anything ...

I would buy a Ruger Hawkeye M77 Sporter in stainless with the laminate stock, in a 30-06. It weighs 7.5lbs, the 30-06 is capabile of taken anything in North America. It list in their catalog at $888 suggested retail, but can be bought under $700, I just got one in 223 for $600 and change. I love it, a great rifle.

How about a Browning X-Bolt with a synthetic stock chambered in 280 Remington? I have an X-Bolt Hunter in 270 Winchester and it is a pleasure to shoot and carry. The rifle is also very accurate. If it was not Christmas time I would pick one of these up myself even though I don't need it.

The somewhat tricky part of this is the moose part. What is adequate for that will be overkill for a deer. To walk the line but be successful with moose I personally would say no less than a .300 Win Mag.

If your looking for new then the there is a ton of options, if you looking for used then it opens up even more. I've seen some 325 WSM guns go for great prices, overkill for deer but would be a nice round for moose.

Great choice! I always liked Brownings and the 280 is really hard to beat. I have a stainless Ruger M77 in 280, its probably my favorite gun. It is too bad you cant get them in Ruger anymore, really glad to hear that Browning has them, I might have to look in to one of those myself.

I'd opt for a Remington 700 in 30.06. I have 2 of the ADL models and would not trade them for anything else. have always had great luck with Core Lokt ammo as well, 150's for Northern white tails and 220's for bullwinkle.

I'd give a look at the T/C Icon and/or Venture.
