Default Best gun for...

Zombies.

OK, half of you are leaving this thread already, but for those of you willing to hang on, let me have your opinion.

Several books have become popular involving the "Zombie Apocalypse." Perhaps the best is The Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks. In it, he talks about firearm use against zombies.

The main considerations are size, sound (report), quantity of ammo, availability of ammo, and reliability.

As you make your suggestions for the weapon of choice, keep in mind that unlike the living, who would run away from gunfire, zombies from miles around would be drawn in by any noise. Also remember that only a head shot will destroy zombies.

As tangents to the main idea, you might want to discuss the effectiveness of home-made silencers, zombie hunting verses mere survival, and defending a stronghold against a zombie horde.

Thanks for participating in a silly, fictional thread

Some type of AR platform in .223 with 30rd mags, silencer, with a removable night vision scope. And of course a Glock 9mm for the close quarter stuff...

I have never seen any zombies, but I hear the game and fish department are stocking them in Virginia.

I think the AR in .223 would be unbeatable for zombie suppression. Low recoil so you can get on the next zombie quickly. Cheap, highly available ammo and you can get more in a clip than larger rounds.

If you are sniping zombies at extreme distance, maybe a .308 would be better.

I'd like one of these please, and lots of ammo.

Things to remember ... a zombie can only be stopped if the brain is destroyed. Shrapnel weapons and explosives might be too chancy. Also, during the zombie apocalypse, killing 5 or 10 zombies with an AR might draw in hundreds or thousands more toward your position. These guns might be good if you are zombie hunting, or have a vehicle for quick escape, but you probably wouldn't want it for defending your stronghold.

A .22 handgun with a high capacity magazine and a suppressor (homemade if laws forbid them in your area) would a good choice for close up protection.

A carbine might be as much good too, maybe even better.

For stealth, a bow or crossbow would be ideal. But you better not bring one to fight dozens or more of the undead...

A field full of claymores would be fun to watch.
