Default RE: .338-06

I' ve only used my 338-06 on whitetails and black bear. The preformance is awesome. I orginally built mine to take on an elk hunt about ten ago but I never had a chance to pull the trigger. I tried a number of different bullets and powder combinations. Most push a 200gr bullet between 2700 and 2800fps without pressure signs. That gives you about the same trajectory as a 30-06 with 180gr bullets. Fast enough for the type of hunting that I do but definately not magnum velocity. I' ve used 200gr speer and 200gr Nosler BT' s on deer and 210gr Partitions on deer and bear. As much as I like my 338-06 I know use it only for bears. I can' t say that a 338-06 is better than a 35 Whelan but it' s a great round. Kinda like picking between a 270 and 280, you just can' t loose. If your friend already has 35 Whelan then I would strongly urge him to build a nice 338-06 or better yet a 338-06 Ackley Improved. I think he' ll like it.

Ive shot a bunch of deer with mine and I love the way it kills. I have mostly used 200 gr bullets but last year I shot a few deer with 185 gr barnes x bullets. The only thing other than whitetails Ive shot with mine was an elk. I used a 250 gr sierra, mainly because that was the best shooting heavy bullet I could come up with. It worked alright though, the wapiti got real calm about twenty seconds after I stuck that bullet in him. The mv for that load was 2550 which was about max for that bullet. I have shot the 200' s at 2900 but it seems to be alot easier to get good accuracy at around 2700. Since your friend has a 338 mag already, he might not be trying to make a magnum out of a 33806 and I think he would find it a fun cartridge. The 33806 is what a 3006 wishes it could be, and then some.

A 350 in a rifle that weighs under 6 lbs! I would have thought the recoil on that would be stout. Sounds like you have a great little rifle. I wouldn' t be too concerned that I couldn' t feed 250' s into it, those 225' s will do just about everything you could ask

How was the muzzle blast from the 350? The only two Model 600' s that I' ve shot were 308' s and in both the muzzleblast was LOUD. I wouldn' t mind having a 358 in a carbine of some type. I guess I would either have to build one from a full size rifle or re-barrel a Model 7 or something similar. What do you think about the 338-308 wildcat? I like the 338 caliber but I' m not sure if I want to have another wildcat in the safe. I don' t have as much time to work with different loads as I once did.
