Default .270 Win. with a 22" barrel...expected muzzle velocity???

Just wondering ( I know there are a TON of variables) what a
BALLPARK estimate of what a 130 gr. factory load would give me out of my 22" barrel on a Ruger Hawkeye.

Also, I'm getting back into handloading, and I'm wondering what kinda' velocity folks are getting with max loads. (again, with a 22" barrel). Obvioulsy I'll start low and work up and look for pressure signs and will be looking for accuracy over raw speed....but if I can get both......

Any input would be greatly appreciated

The 22" barrel should drop your velocity by about 70-80 fps vs a 24" barrel. Most standard factory 270 win loads are 3060 fps with 130gr bullets out of a 24" barrel.

I have a load using a 130gr Speer boattail 59.9 grs of IMR 4831 going 3288 fps out of a 26" barrel. That's about about the top end of the spectrum. If your rifle shoots it accurately and there's no obvious signs of pressure then I would say it would work in your rifle. That was one load that I played with that was very hot and very accurate in that particular rifle. On average most rifles do well between the 50-100 fps below max. Take in consideration that most reloading books today are -100 fps below max of what they once showed for data. I would say 60grs of IMR 4831 would be as far as I tried to push a max load until I tested a few rounds.

I have a Ruger in 270 and I guess factory is hiting just shy of 3000fps and my handloads with 60gr. of H4831sc are giving me on average 3100 fps.

I would think you should be somewhere in the 3000fps range. I have a 270 WSM that I load for and using 140gr Nolser Accubonds and 70.5 grains of Mag Pro powder, I get 3161fps out of it over a chrono. I've gotten them over 3300fps but accuracy was no where near what the load above is. 5 shots in under .75" at 100 yards outside to outside.
