Default setting up your M&P15-22

Just was looking for a couple ideas on how to customise my Smith 15-22. (That is once i buy one) I cant decide between the regular version or the model with the threaded barrel and flash hider. Whats the major difference between the two models? Just the threaded barrel? I also take it the barrel is threaded on the inside? I know im also gunna want a different grip, and would like to cover the rails or maybe buy a whole new rail system if possible? Im going to mount a barska electro sight so my optics are already covered. Id love to see pictures of your personal setup and all info and suggestions are appreciated.

I'd strongly suggest that you look at the Ruger SR22 instead of the Smith.

It uses the same reliable 10-22 action that Ruger is famous for, it's receiver and forearm is all aluminum instead of polymer like the Smith. Rails can be added or removed as you wish unlike the Smith. The Ruger will accept all of the regular aftermarket parts for the 10-22 like triggers, extended mag releases, extended magazines, etc... all readily available.

It really depends on what you want the MP15-22 for.

If you want it as a trainer for your AR, then it should be set up the same or as close to it as you can. I’ve set mine up similar to my Colt 6920, with a forward mounted dot sight, VFG, and an Insight M3 light. The .22 is also lighter, so I added some weight to the PG and the VFG.

That way you get the most out of your time spent with the MP15-22. If you just want a plinker, then all bets are off and set it up anyway you want to.

Bigbulls is correct, the forearm on the MP15-22 is an integral part of the upper, the best you can do is swap out the rail covers to match what you want. So far mine’s been very reliable, and more accurate than my Colt with a Spikes conversion unit due to the S&W having the proper twist rate for a .22 as compared to the 1-7 on my Colt.
