Default Remington 600 6.5mm Rem. Mag. rebarreled?

Considering re-barreling, and have a few questions...

First, can the 600's be re-barreled?

This has an 18" barrel, when the 673 was redone a few years back I recall it having a 22" barrel, figure this cartridge should have something in the 22-24" barrel range for ideal velocity, your thoughts? Still want it to be handy though and accurate.

I'm thinking a 22" #2 contour w/ straight flutes, your suggestions? If I went to 24" what contour would you want, #2? #3?

Also am I ruining this rifle for resale if I strip the 18" mohawk barrel, ie vent ribbed? or doing it a favor?

Recently read up on this cartridge, seems it was almost the original short mag, figure Remington re-released ammo for it to maybe catch on the craze? 120gr@3200fps, was that calculated in a 24" barrel anyone know? rem. factory ammo?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Doing a rebarrel may hurt the value. The 6.5 and 350 mags have always brought premium prices over the other calibers.

Yes the 600 Rem can be rebarreled.....and if it needs a new barrel, rebarreling to the 6.5 Rem Mag is a great idea.....The 6.5 Rem Mag is a great cartridge and the 600 Rem rifle makes it a special gun.

Personally, I'd use a Shilen #1 contour or a #2 at the heaviest and a 20" or 22" barrel...It's your gun so choose the length you like...

I strongly recommend choosing barrel length for your carrying desires and not for some preconceived velocity advantage. Have it your way!!!

is it the 5 pc. laminated walnut maple stock? I ask because you mention mohawk, the rem 600's had the laminate in the magnum cals. the mohawks were'nt made in the mags, and didn't have a rib, and no laminates. just wanna make sure of what your rifle is or was from the factory.

I thought the mohawk referred to the vent rib.

Either way yes it's the laminated model with the 18.5" vent rib barrel.

Sounds like it's kinda better left whole, the barrel isn't shot out just not ideal IMO for a 6.5 mag.

The mohawks were a different model, built after the 660 was dropped.
What I would do is rebarrel with a 22-24" barrel of the same contour, keep the factory barrel/rib, that way you could always restore it.
