Default Mountain / Sheep Rifle?

Browning Abolt Ti, 5-3/4 lbs, 23" barrel, $1000

Remington Alaskan Ti, 6 lbs, 24" barrel, $1400

270 WSM vs. 300 WSM

Think I need both! haha.

Doesn't have to just be for sheep, basically just a lightweight mtn. rifle.

The 270wsm seems ideal for antelope-caribou, past that I'm not sure...

The 300wsm seems pretty good for anything cept maybe some brown bears. Which brings up the point of hunting sitka deer, goat/sheep in grizzly country...? The 270 might be perfect for sheep but if you run into a griz wouldn't you rather have a 300? but of course wouldn't you rather have a 270 for antelope than a 300? also flatter bullet of the 270 seems nice.

Open to better rifle/bullet suggestions as well though like the idea of a short action round.

Btw, is there a way to calculate the velocity loss from 24" to 23" in both 270wsm and 300wsm? I assume the 300wsm would lose less velocity than the 270 but just how much?

How about a Sako 85 Finnlite, Kimber Montana or a Weatherby Ultralight? Heck, you might just as well go for the gusto and order a NULA from Melvin!

I would go with a Kimber Montana in 243,260 remington, or 7mm 08 for that kind of money. It is only 5.2 LBS.

I absolutely cannot stand rubber grips molded into stocks...refuse! So that sako finnlite is out.

Weatherby is a maybe but only in 30-06 or 270...

Kimber I've heard alot of problems about...also that grey stock in person looked very blue and ugly.

NULA have thought about but that's $3400...

I really don't understand who's designing these rifles these days...?

My rem700 mtlss 7-08/leupold 2.5-8x36/w/ steel mounts, weighs about 7.5lbs total. Ive carried it up and down ridges all day w/ no problem. Very weather resistant & looks great! The whole set up cost me about 1300$ .

I read that titanium actions are rough, and a 6lbs rifle in anything over 243 will probably kick pretty good.

I like the Remington Alaskan Ti, but in 7MM RM or .300 WM (both very flat shooting).

And for the same reasons......................."in grizzly country...?"

That's why I use a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .338 WM for my mountain rifle.

I say the Browning A-Bolt Ti in 300 wsm. Then again I'm partial to Brownings. With the 300 wsm you can shoot the 130 gr ttsx for and medium game and 180 gr partition for larger game and the bears.

Swapping out a stock requires more than just swapping it out right? don't you have to bed the stock? What's that cost etc...?

A drop in stock simply requires unscrewing the 2 action screws, removing the barreled action from the factory stock and screwing it on the new stock. Some aftermarket stocks come w/ bedding blocks though, but nothing really changes.
