RE: 300 WEATHERBY MAG.--BEST LOAD
Hey, loner, I grew up one county south of you and I do some hunting in your neck of the woods. I' ve got two cousins that live in Sardis and we lease some land southwest of there. What part of Panola county do you hunt?
My favorite deer rifle is my .300 Weatherby Sako. I haven' t bought any factory ammo in a while since I handload, but I know a couple of factory offerings from Weatherby that will probably serve you well. You could try the 180 grain SP (Hornady Spire Point) or the 180 grain Nosler Partition. When I first got my rifle and before I reloaded for it, I tried the 180 gr. SP and it shot really well. It' ll be fine out to and beyond the ranges you' re shooting. If you can' t find this ammo in your area, you may have to make a trip to Memphis or you can order it from Cabelas I think.
I' ve been using the 165gr. Hornady SST and 180 gr. Swift Scirocco in mine lately, but I' m not really satisfied with how they perform on whitetail. Sometimes I shoot em' really close (like 15 or 20 yards) and I find that these bullets expand too much at this distance. I recently bought some of the new Barnes Triple Shocks and I' m going to be working up a load with them in the next few weeks. As a matter of fact, I' ll probably be heading down your way to try them out. You' re welcome to join me, but right now I don' t know when that will be.
