How's that compared to a 243 AI?

It's the same thing. All AI's have a 40' shoulder.

Thanks for stating the obvious. I was curious about the actual cartridge as the 6mm was another one of Remington's red-headed step children.

just like the 6mm over the standard 243, the AI'd versions at the same pressures gives a 200 fps advantage to the 6mm.

Nothing is wrong with the 6mm, what killed it was the way remington marketed it, they used a 12 twist in the 244 rem. while win gave the 243 a 10 twist, this made the 243 suitable for using 100 gr bullets making it a dual purpose varmint/deer rifle. the 12 twist limited the 244 to 80-85 gr bullets. When rem. saw the error and changed it to a 9.25 twist and renamed it the 6mm it had already lost favor.

Same story with the 7mm Express / 280 Remington?

yep, reckon they'll ever get it right? the couple times they did (the short mags, and the 5mm), they were ahead of they're times and were basicly ignored.

I could never figure out the demise of the 7mm SAUM. I suppose Winchester got there first? Although the 7WSM seems to be fading in models offered. I like the idea of a short action 7mm. Something that is able to push 160's over 3,000 fps would be nice. Gamble on getting brass I suppose.

I actually had two of the 5mm, and practically gave them away. Now you can get the ammo from Centurian for nothing.

was referring to the 6.5 and the 350 rem mags, both excellant cartridges, both recieved little or no attention back in the 60's, nothing like the wsm's recieved when they were introduced. The wsm's were well thought out, the rsaum's were an attempt by rem. to get a "slice of the pie" and the wsm's were too .020 too long to work in a model 7 action, by the time rem revamped the model 7 to accept the wsm's guess what? the rsaum's had allready rolled over, and the cool factor had worn off the wsm's, yep they missed that boat also!
