Folks, need some help. Bought a 760 last year in 300 savage. Gun is from the '60's. I wanted a back up magazine so I ordered from Remington direct. When it arrived it did not say 300 savage on it, but all these Calibers: 7mm-08, 257, 308,6mm,243, and 260. I called Remington and they said this "new" magazine would work for my old 760 and to take it to a gunsmith for an "adjustment". Well two trips to the gunsmith and it still won't feed into my old gun. Went back to the last gunsmith and looked through his pile of excess old magazines and found two that look similar to my original magazine. One said 257 RBTS and the other said 6mm,308 a 243 win. (this magazine also had a little round knob on side to pop out cartridges??? He said these would also work in my gun. What's the story here? Am I missing something??? Will either of the two magazines work for my 300 savage gun? Thanks
whats your mag doing to "not feed"? the bullet tip catching? the 257 roberts is the same as a 6mm so its the same clip.
The one with the knob on the side is the same mag except the follower comes up a bit higher to catch the bolt when the mag is empty, the lil knob just lowers the mag follower a bit to release the bolt, these mags were intended for the rem 742's, same gun that you have except its a semi auto, it should work in a 760.
Now if your cartridges are hanging up in the bolt lugs here is the "probable" causes
if the tip hangs up below the chamber entrance the front end of the mag is too low. There is a dimple on the front to hold it locked in place, could be either the dimple or the recess that holds it is worn.
If the bullet tip goes high above the chamber, its likely that the front of the clip is too high, likely caused by the dimple being out of position.
close the action and insert a mag with 3 shells in it, now open the action....Can you press the front of the magazine up without much resistance? if so....
If you hold the mag up will it feed?
keep us posted

I have a 760 in .270 and I bought a new clip for it a while back. The clip has several calibers listed on it...including .270.
It works, but not as well as the original clip. Not sure if it's the "universal" nature of the newer clip, but it seems to catch the lip of the cartridge every now and then.

The 270, 280, 30/06, and 35 whelen are all the same case so the mags are all identicle, its just an individual discrepency in that clip, a smith can adjust it and make it work fine.

edited to add: one of the most common practices thats hard on 750/742 mags is to stuff the mag in and slap it with the palm of the hand to seat it, this over time distorts the notches that lock and hold them in place, best way is insert and press in to latch, it takes a bit of effort since you must fully compress the follower spring to latch the mag.

My "new" magazine wasn't allowing the cartridges to seat up into the chamber. Putting the old mag and the new mag side by side, I noticed the height of the newer one to be taller. It just doesn't snap into the gun and lock in. When I think it's all the way in, the cartridges won't feed in. Is it safe to uas the mag that says 257 rbts on it even though my gun is 300 savage? It looks like my original.
the new magazines come in 2 sizes...long action (270-35 whelen) and short action (your 308 and similar..)
that short action one should work...i dont know why it doesnt...
my dad has a 760 that has a barrel code a year before they were released...i have 2 of the newer long action mags for my whelen and they work fine in his 760 in 3006...
alot of guys get thrown off because some mags actually have 1 caliber on them...i believe they are the originals that came with the gun...though my 2005 7600 had one marked identical to the new replacement mags....but there are mags floating around that have just 1 caliber listed..i know my buddy has a few 760 BDL 308's and they say 308 right on it and nothing else...
hmmm after reading some different stuff, seems your not the only one having trouble with 300 savage not liking magazines....
they all agreed that the short action mag should work but can finicky...odd 2 gunsmiths couldnt help ya out...

More likely two smith's that don't know the 740/760, 7400/7600 platform and don't know how to figure it out.

Just look at the parallels of the Nazi regime and the Obama Administration amazingly similar arent' they.
Well it looks like the "older" mag marked 257 rbts chambers the cartidges well. It looks and feels worn in like the original mag that came with my 300 savage. I'm a little frosted that either smith didn't fix the ""new" remington mag also. I would go back to the first smith but it is far away and not worth the gas. The second guy had the older magazines that he let me try with my gun. So, I will just trade it out with him. Second smith thought it odd about remington sending me a new mag with all those calibers etched on the side. Oh well, hopefully problem solved. Thanks for the help.
