Here is my list for the 4 guns that a hunter could use to 99% of what North America has to offer.
#1 Ruger 10/22 any model but bull barrel / laminate stock is nice. Use it for squirels, rabbits, target practice, plinking etc. Great for getting a lot of trigger pulls in, easily customized. Nice mid line scope will suffice. 3x or 4x is enough.
#2 Bolt Action Savage 12bvss with acutriger in 243win. Bull Barrel if you can heft it. Great for deer, antilope, turkeys (south dakota), and can be loaded for varmints and target shooting. Wood or Synthetic OK. Leupold / Nikon level scope 3x9 or 2x7 good choices depending on where you hunt. Maybe a second long range scope maybe not.
#3 Bolt Action Weatherby Accumark w/ break in 338. Gets the job done on North American Big Game. Synthetic Stock and stainless a must for all weather hunting. Any top grade optics from Nikon, Leupold and up. 3x9 or about depending on model and intended use. Elk, bear, mulies, moose, big bear, caribou, sheep, goats, etc, etc.
#4 Remington 870 12ga Shotgun 3" chamber. Mat finish and oiled wood look. I got mine and I will never, ever, not in 100 years get rid of it. It never fails, ever. Nuf said.
Just my thoughts on what would get the job done if you have a wife that is counting guns in the cabinet weekly.
Throw in your votes for the 4 best guns / cal that a guy could go with. Maybe you only need 3 or 2?
